Cannock Chase: 16th Worst Place To Live (Channel 4)

Hi there

Just wondering how true this statement is below. Is it just the Cannock area that this applies to - or Stafford as well? I mean, I don't find Stoke-on-Trent (13th worst place to live) to be particularly salubrious, yet Leek, 10 miles down the road is still quite nice. What are council tax rates for Stafford? Violent crime?? Weekly pay?

"Cannock Forest is just one example of the woodland here that provides a rural retreat, along with Fairoak Valley, which is one of the more popular destinations for cyclists. Indeed, Cannock Chase is home to the Midlands' first dedicated mountain biking trail - at seven miles long, it's named 'Follow the Dog', although it's not immediately clear why - with another cross country trail soon to follow.

Established in 1962, the German Military Cemetery, a memorial to around 5,000 victims of war, is a tribute to post-war co-operation and visited by a number of German nationals each year who tend to the grave plots in collaboration with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The average house price in Cannock is 10 per cent up on that for 2006, at £169,000, although council tax in the area is comfortably above the national average by nearly £200 per year, regardless of which band the property falls into. Luckily, the rate of robberies falls below the national average, as does the rate of vehicle-related offences, although violent crime is higher than the national rate.

Perhaps due to its green status, the proportion of employees in tourism-related roles in Cannock is higher than the national average, standing at 9.4 per cent of the local workforce. Among that workforce though, the average gross weekly pay is £50 less than the national average for men, at £490.50 per week, and nearly £80 down on the average pay for women at £308.30. At least they have nice scenery to look at while they're working... "

They trawl out statistics to give credance to whatever opinion they really hold! Cannock and the surrrounding area are no better or worse than most of the country. It has undeniable problems, as most towns do! The levels of poverty don'e do it any favours, but who could deny that the countryside is spectacular? The hospital is a jewel (and I should know!), which not every Stafforshire town can claim!

PS Ignore above, I have just remembered they have Fred Pritchard!!!!!!!!!!! Let the rain fall on them!

One thing I know about the cannock area is the accent sends shivers up my spine.

If Cannock Chase is 16th, where does Portsmouth come?
Portsmouth not listed - the only 'southern' places are the likes of Islington and Barking/Dagenham!

What about pay rates? Do you think they're any lower? I've looked at some jobs down in Gloucestershire and Berkshire and they don't seem much better to those in Stafford....

I think its fairly neutral which is suprising considering the local areas. Perhaps its a destructive interferance effect where they all cancel each other out. Of course there is a LOT of lazy dialect here as there is with anywhere north of the M4 corridor, but no real accent as such.

Accents in general irritate me but some more than others, and the cannock accent just makes me think that the speaker is an idiot because pretty much every single word is mispronounced. The stoke accent is also annoying but I almost never come into contact with stokies (thankfully I don't meet many people from cannock often either).
