I was (un)reliably (mis)informed that the Common boot sale would recommence this morning, but when I got there the field was bare. So I had to go to Cannock ( if I hadn't metabolised the adrenalin I would have had the palpitations again ). I haven't been to Cannock for a while now, but, looking at the local population, I wonder if there might be additional reasons for the high death rate in the local hospitals. I was also surprised by the variety of obscure languages in use. The Poles I could understand, but not the locals. Anyway, wim gwing wom nah - apparently.

I got a rather nice rucksack - you just can't have too many, can you?

My father has informed me The common car boots starting next week. Apparently some problems with a license or something meant they couldnt do it this morning. Although im not sure how accurate his reason really is.

I appologise for not saying something earlier actually he did tell me on friday and i meant to post it on here, but i forgot until i just read your post. Might have saved you a journey.

That's OK, I'll put down to the inbreeding.

I suspect they couldn't get the licence for the boot sale, as it seems that Pat Collins' Funfair has got it instead.
I did however turn up to survey the car boot leftovers just after 11am, and I can confirm Gramaisc's observation of nothing.

Last night after I realised I had no access to a wallpapering table, I thought I might as well go out into town for a drink, so good job I didn't turn up to sell! Looks like next week it is (if Pat Collins has departed).

I have just come past the Common and the Pat Collins Funfair is installing itself there. One of the smaller vehicles has only sufficient space for an abbreviated version of the name - PC Funfair - I wonder if it is?

What? A funfair for geeks who use personal computers?

Or a funfair with rides with names such as...

"Rotary Elevator" (Ferris Wheel)
"The Sanitation-Challenged Rodent Recreation Trackway" (Rat Run)
"The Adversely-Elated Life-Challenged Vehicle Track" (Ghost Train) and...
"Highway Code-Contrary Allocated Traffic Collision Area" (Dodgems).

Anyway, I see no mention of the boot sale in any papers yet - I wonder what the turnout will be like on Sunday...?

I thought the boot sale usually starts on the first bank holiday weekend..... but when the funfair is there usually the boot sale is on the field at the back of the fair - but when that happens the boot sale is usually really small.

The boot sale is back on now - at the back of the fair this week. There was nothing too exciting there, all I spent was a quid on a 3 x 11 watt CFL ceiling fitting. It must be worth that if only one of the tubes works! Lots of plants for gardeny types.

You have almost answered my question before I even asked it. However could you be more specific on what types of plants? Im hoping i can get some tomato and broad bean plants from there like i did last year.

How big do tom plants grow? I have 20 cherry tomato plants growing at the min (didn't expect them all to germinate) and a 3m greenhouse, so prob have a few spare. Only seedlings at the min though, been in about 3 weeks and just starting their second leaves. If you want some just let me know mate.

cheers i may do.

Tomato plants can get to a fair size if you let them. I had a grow bag with 3 in last yeat that grew to 3-4 ft high and a foot wider than the gro bag round the edges. The plants need alot of supporting aswell or they can break. I actually had to keep pinching the new shoots out to stop it getting any bigger. Had some others that i trained vertically against a fench that wern't as bushy but got to about 5 ft high.

I like to be of service. Most of what I saw this morning was of the ornamental types, but I wasn't paying a great deal of attention at the time, so struck was I by the light fitting that I had procured. If I had known your requirements then I would have provided an annotated list. If you were to attend regularly, or possibly to ask at the Holmcroft Allotment Shop, you might come across seedlings of the more edible varieties.

The boot sale was quite large today, but there was little for the connoisseur. The Beast was there with his Beastette and a selection of tasteful ornaments. All I bought was an unabridged 6-CD box of Anthony Blair, Captain of School for £1. The rise of fall of the Dear Leader told in the style of an Edwardian school novel, á la Bunter/Jennings, etc.

With the money that I will save by staying in and listening to all six and three quarter hours of this, instead of going to the pub, I will be able to go the pub.

On the plant front, it was mostly perennials, but there was some annuals and a few food related plants available.

Didn't do too badly this week, pretty good in fact. Got a picture for £1.50, and a copper plant trough thingy for £4. Best though was £3.32 for 2 lengths of steel armoured cable, one approx 14m and he other around 8m. Thats power sorted for my greenhouse now :D
