Car Parking Dimensions

Ok folks, amongst all my other 20 odd projects that I have on the go at the moment, I'm considering taking up some of my back garden to use as a car parking space as I only have on road parking and it's a pain sometimes to find a space near my house.

I have the 'luxury' of having a service road run down the side of my property. However, the road is only about 3 metres wide but was wondering if a car that is about 3,80m (l) x 1.80m (w), how wide would I need to make the opening so that I can bay park width ways at the foot of the garden. Does that make sense?

Cheers.

Can you perform a handbrake turn?

Or a reverse flip?

What about transcibing the measurements to a piece of waste ground - using tape held down by bricks / cardboard box representing corner of house etc - then, perhaps with an assistant, carefully follow the course in your car to check whether feasible ?
And try it in both directions, you can usually get into a tighter space easier in reverse.

Oooh, Matron!

Cheers for the advice. I think there might be a television series in this. :)

Excellent idea for a TV show, maybe presented by Brian Inglis. However he is sadly no longer available. Perhaps Hammond, May or Clarkson could have the clout to make this a prime-time must watch ?........
