Nah the duratec engines start at 1.4 although the engine in mine is the zetec-SE engine. I quite like the zetec engine for about town use, but for cruising it's woeful. And you can forget 'spirited' driving. My brother has the 1.8 and it is definitely a much quicker feeling car - a combination of the larger engine and shorter final drive gear.

I'm quite tempted by the ST170 as the focus is a very very comfy car and lovely to drive, but I think it'll feel underpowered again. A real shame for such a good chassis. As such, come the summer I reckon I'll probably go for the Type R. Saying that, the interior is hideous :/
Diseasels are the way to go :P With the exception if its aircooled and Volkswagen I've developed something of an aversion to petroleum machines.

I have no problem with diesels - the golf GTTDi is a monster, as is the bosses jaaaaaaaaag (3 litre V6 twin turbo charged - zoom zoom). The smaller ones are a little dull though, buckets of torque for 1500 rpm and then it's out of puff. They do go well and the newer ones with lighter units are handling as well as their petrol counterparts, but you also have to pay a fair bit more initially for the diesel unit.

All being well I'm getting a company car in the summer which will most definitely be a diesel, so any other car I get will be for weekend kicks (although hopefully not on the B5066). A car usable on track would be most acceptable :)

As I walked back from my foray out to write down the details from Mr B's Fruit and Veg van the other day, I was passed by some lad ( I presume ) in his mother's 'hot hatch' doing a good sixty on our still pristine road surface. By the time I had thought "Where are the coppers when you need them?", they came flying past, all lights blazing and, presumably, will have caught him by Beaconside.

Just in case anyone is bored by the talk of sensible reasonably priced cars, here's something to lighten things up. Mclaren mercedes are in fact going ahead with the stirling moss edition of the slr - only 75 to be made and will cost you a cool million. Absolute beast, usual mclaren shizzle V8 with a supercharger..... environmentalists and diesel freaks may want to look away now:

I'm quite liking the Nissan Juke now I am getting used to it.
How did you get on in all the snow and ice, i've seen posts in one of the motoring forums saying that the tyres fitted are not up to job in extreme weather ?

Sorry, when I said "now I am getting used to it" I meant should have said "getting used to looking at it"...

I don't actually have one.

Saying that, my Smart was absolutely flipping useless in the snow.

Anyone ever driven one of these? They look like they might well have a chassis which is a lot of fun!

Daihatsu Copen... they are tiny. Think they have a really small engine in them too.

Never driven one though so can't comment but think I would opt for an MX-5 over this even if it did mean going for an older one for the same money.

The first time I saw a copen I really couldn't believe how small it was; it really does appear to be the size of noddy's car :o

Not really comparable though, this is smaller, lighter and is front wheel drive whereas the mazda is a FR configuration and significantly bigger. The car looks like an awful lot of fun, and when driven right you can really carry speed through corners with FF cars.

I believe they only come with one engine which is a 90 bhp 1.3 litre. I would imagine it's a giggle in a 700kg car - 128bhp/ton - marginally less than a Focus ST170.

Having a short wheelbase means it'll turn quickly on it's axis, which is good for tight tracks. It would be useless on the straight for sure, but who cares about straights?
