There’s a ‘mini’ version similar to this in the Kingston Pool Covert (South) - the woodland next to Beaconside / Weston Rd island. It’s a patch of grass and foliage approx 40’ dia. on which you could jump up and down creating a ‘trampoline’ effect.

And also Loynton Moss, across the canal, south of Woodseaves.

With all this talk elsewhere of pacemakers, I should mention that the presenter in the Chartley video above is Chris Brasher, surely one of the most famous of pacemakers, without whom we might remember a different name, other than Roger Bannister...

What fascinated me at Chartley Moss was the many trees towards the middle that had died at a certain height as their roots had passed through the 'raft' and got waterlogged by the deep water below.
I've not seen that at Loynton Moss or Kingston Pool Covert.

The Wildlife Trust had a new reserve near Talke Pits in the 90s and had found a very early map showing a pond there. There was no sign of the pond still existing at the time, or on any subsequent maps. Having had a good look round they felt there was no sign of a pond, or even the remains thereof, and I went up there with one of the staff, who wasn't the most map-orientated of people. I had compared various maps and felt that I could identify where the pond had been fairly accurately. He had no faith in this, but went along with it.

We set off towards where the location was and, approaching it, I said, "This should be about where the near edge was". At that moment, his entire leg went through the skin of the floating grass mat - and he is probably still convinced that I set up the whole thing.
