So the council has been given another grant, this one to improve the road network.

Asking for opinions, but think they already have a good idea what they're going to do.

Plans also include moving the bus stop, changing the crossing, and imposing a 20mph max speed round Sainsbury's, as well as a new cycle lane.

Just a shame that road was only dug up like a few years ago !

On the whole, looks like a good plan though.

On the whole looks good but why reduce the limit to 20 when the current 30 is not causing accidents? Air pollution from transport increases with the lower speeds so why not keep it at 30?

Looks like they are going to set a 20mph limit along Chell road as this will fit in with the appalling road surface that is there now, still they may get those cowboys back to tar & chip it in the summer as they have done with many other roads in Stafford (unlike past the council offices) that should last until next winter (?) with a bit of luck.

Because injury to cyclists and pedestrians increases with motor vehicle speed? Because the slower cars go the more likely people will choose to walk and cycle benefitting us all?

Anything that helps walkers and cyclists gets my support. I'd like this to be the start of cycling and walking being totally prioritised across the whole Borough. Be gone dodgy painted lines masquerading as cycle paths! We need a fully joined up car free network of cycle paths suitable for even the youngest on every road. Think pavements which keep pedestrians segregated from traffic but for cyclists!

That's fine, as long as cyclists keep off the footpaths, unless it is a designated cycle lane. Use lights and hi viz at night, fit a bell to warn folk they're approaching.

Totally agree. However I have no issue with cyclists using the footpath thereby avoiding death at the hands of a juggernaut. Where safe cycling spaces be provided they should be used!

Why so many cyclists refuse to use lights is a mystery. Take responsibility for your own lives people, or don't expect others to!

Probably for the same reason they ride illegally (& usually in considerately) both ways up the pedestrian areas of the town centre, why so many ignore traffic lights etc etc.

The Highway Code Rule 64 states: You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement. But in Rule 62 it advises how to behave when cycle tracks are alongside footpaths and pavements. Unless there is a designated cycle path, they should be on the road.

Are there still Cycling Proficiency Tests these days?

I think the highway code is somewhat outdated!

The idea that cyclists should be on the road possibly dates from an era of empty roads and before modern cars and enormous juggernauts swamped the roads :(. I don't know when that rule was introduced but I shall continue to preserve my life and cycle on the pavements where proper segregated cycle paths are not provided. Pedestrians are provided a safe space to walk, pavements, cyclists should be provided with the same facility

The council have a plan to reduce unemployment in the county. It involves making the unemployed walking along in front of cars, carrying a red flag. This will warn the cyclists and e scooter riders, slow the cars to a safe speed and because the unemployed are doing this they will not be eligible to be called unemployed and can be removed from the statistics.

Enjoying a drop of red.

You lost me at 'the council has a plan'.

But there not getting injured at 30 so why reduce to 20. This scheme aims to give cyclists pedestrians and motor vehicles there own separate road spaces so regardless of 20 or 30 limit it will be walker/ cyclist-friendly.

You barely got above 20 when driving on Chell Rd in normal peak times as it is.

I still have my cycling proficiency certificate somewhere :)
I failed the Cycling Proficiency Test at the junior school but then cycled some 40,000 miles ( including 30,000 to and from work between 1976 and 2002 ) until a stroke twelve years ago affected my balance.
