Once again I'll have point-of-lay hens for sale again this year. If anyone is looking for a rewarding pet, then they don't come better than this. Home fresh eggs that always seem to taste better than shop sold free range eggs!

Visit www.chirpychickens.co.uk for prices, stock levels and advice for beginners.

:)

That's about it. Now cluck off! ;)

Many people don't seem to realise this, but in most cases when you buy a chicken for Sunday dinner - that would be a cock. They're of no use other than breeding or meat purposes. Hens are usually kept for laying purposes - and again alot of people also don't realise that no cock is needed for a hen to lay eggs (only to fertilise them). You can also eat fertile eggs as long as they haven't been incubated you wouldn't know the difference... in fact when you buy genuine FREE RANGE eggs alot of the time they can actually be fertile as cockrels are ranging with the hens. I actually once incubated a dozen shop bought free range eggs and found 5 to be fertile!

There you go.... a few random facts for you :)

Not necessarily, in commercial egg production most male chicks are killed off at birth. The reason being that different breeds of hen are used for eggs than ones used for chicken meat which are bred to be slaughtered at around 6 weeks from birth.

Statistically, 50% of chickens will be male, so what happens to yours? 18 chickens advertised for sale = on average 18 males also born.

On the latter point, people's ignorance of basic biology in relation to animals they eat or consume products from never ceases to astound me...

I'm not actually a breeder (the neighbours went crazy when we once tried keeping a cockrel - lol). I buy mine in from a supplier 50 miles from here because I've had hens from other places and always had health issue's - so now I stick to the one who supplies me healthy birds reliably. I sell a few more as a hobby and just cover my costs.
Male's I assumed become meat birds - so I stand corrected and I've learnt something new :)
I assume the male chicks therefore become dog food / ferret and snake feed etc.... but who knows!

As for the 50% statistic, I must be mighty unlucky then. We've hatched a total of 36 eggs ourselves before (in batches of 12). Ended up with around 8 or 9 males every time which is why we decided to knock that on the head. Having said that a friend hatched 15 and got 10 hens so I guess it really is just down to luck

I keep a few chickens myself, lost one in the winter, if I bought one off you would it do ok, or likely get bullied?

Worse case scenario bullied for a day or two while it settles in - but it's nature! It would be fine ;)

Cool, if your available I may pop round tomorrow, but I'll give you a ring. I'm at the top of the Sandon road so not far.

No problem at all - if we do go anywhere it would most likely be in the morning, so if you can make it from 2pm onwards it would probably be best ;)

Gave the run a bit of a revamp this weekend, got battered into a muddy mess over the winter. Going to try pop round one evening this week.

Regards.

The bullying will go on for more than a couple of day, it will last a couple of weeks at least!
I've been keeping chooks for several years and it has personally never taken this long at all.
I'm not saying you are incorrect, but maybe this is more the case when you introduce one to a confined flock - ours have plenty of room to get out of the older hens way which maybe helps.

Wilkos do indeed, although they are a little pricey for the feed stuff & treatments.

If anyone was thinking about buying a couple of hens then please check out my website as I'm now only taking orders for my next batch on 20th april (demand has been huge).
@adawson - I can still sort you out with just one if you still want one please get in touch.
