Under the new anti child porn legislation Cameron has pledged to make law before the end of the year. ISP's will block by default all that THEY deem pornographic but not only porn will be blocked

ISPs will also block access to other material, including: "content tagged as violent, extremist, terrorist, anorexia and eating disorders, suicide, alcohol, smoking, web forums, esoteric material and web-blocking circumvention tools"

What next ??

what do they mean by esoteric?

Are we sleepwalking into full internet censorship

Actually thats kind of wrong, ISPs will not ban what THEY feel deem pornographic. That list will be drawn up by a government body that does not have to publicise what it is banning nor why it is banning it, and nobody will have any recourse should they find their own site banned. The list will not be centered on pornography, and is already known to contain many file sharing websites - even those that merely discuss the filesharing world but do not break any laws. Other topics include terrorism (of course), violence, alcohol, tobacco and just to be sure any site mentioning circumvention methods to get around the filters will also find themselves banned.

Will it work? Course it fekkin wont. The filter stops nothing, you can still choose to opt out. If you are a crap parent chances are you don't care what your kids see, so you'll turn the filter off. Not that it even matters then, as chances are your kid will know more about the internet than you anyway so will bypass it themselves regardless of the filter. In fact if I was a nonce I'd make a point of keeping the filters on to stay below the radar then use all the usual methods to still do as I please. I hide my online activities just because I can, if I was a kiddie fiddler I'd be bloody well sure to do so!

Blocking wont work any way Virgin Media do that with Pirate bay and Isohunt but it is easy enough to bypass, i cant think of a way for this to work, maybe some sort of free Net nanny that is installed on all new pcs might work.

I have a copy of Joe Orton's Loot which contains a copy of the letter he got back from the Lord Chancellor when it was submitted for performance, as one had to in those days - it's even funnier than the play itself..

Crack cocaine is on a list (somewhere) of illegal narcotics, but doesn't mean you can't get your hands on the substance if you really wanna!!

Though, impo it's a step in the right direction.

I was thinking of organising a bus trip to Bluffdale so we can go and reclaim our data from the lost luggage department

Any takers?
