I've decided to have a noodle about with Garageband on the iPhone4. Does anyone know if a simple 1/4" to 3.5mm jack lead will work, or will I need to buy a stupid dongley thing. T'internet seems to be tied on this issue.

I'm guessing you want to record external instruments / vocals into GB? If so, the answer to your question is either. Your mileage may vary and it is totally dependent on what sort of quality you're expecting. Personally, I would try the cheaper option of line-in first and see if the results are acceptable.

This site seems to be quite a non-biased take on the options available.

Thanks. I forgot to update this with my findings... Well... for less than a tenner I bought the bits to make my own interface. Its a bit crappy and noisy, but as i really only want to use it as a practice amp it is good enough. I could fettle about with it and add a noise gate to improve it, i suppose. Once I've worded up the instructions, I'mm post them here.

Bring it down the Phoenix Music Breakfast Club on Gaol Road one saturday morning and show it off? Starts at 11am, open to all musicians. £3 gets you a bacon and sausage sandwich, a go on all the gear is free.

I've used iRig before at a mate's place and it wasn't bad. For portability it is convenient but I couldn't see myself replacing the laptop at a gig, not yet anyway.
