Council to sell Cannock chase

I have today received an inside review and proposal prepared by Staffordshire County Council for the potential sale of its countryside estate. Bad news all rounds, not just for the millions of visitors, but for our wildlife, nature and habitats, as well a job cuts, contractor losses and overall economic downfall.

The estate totals about 6000 acres comprising of 6 main country parks, 9 picnic areas and a number of smaller sites and 3 disused railway lines.

All of the main country parks have protected habitats and sites, Cannock Chase Country Park been the largest of the main country parks and is designated a Special Area of Conservation, lying within the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with Approximately 3,000,000 million visits each year.

The estates sector houses several staffing teams to run The management, and maintenance, of the, 1 Rural Access Manager, 2 Head Rangers, 1 Works Unit Manager, 14 Rangers, 17 Estate Workers and 1 Development Officer . A total of 26 jobs in management and maintenance, alone which ultimately will have the cut. On top of these roles, staff at all it’s visitor centres, chasewater and administration staff all face loosing their jobs.

The Review will be in two stages.

The first stage is to find new ways to manage the countryside estate which focus on the delivery of outcomes rather than outputs and which ensure its long-term sustainability.
Local communities and volunteers have been involved with the management of the countryside estate for many years. We also know from recent discussions that there is an appetite amongst the private, public and third sector to collaboratively manage the green space provision county-wide.

This initial engagement process commences in May and given the extent of organisations and groups to be consulted, is likely to take about 6 – 8 weeks to complete.
Once completed, the potential management options will be evaluated against the critical success factors. Those options which could meet the critical success factors will then be considered by and agreed with elected members.
Because the County Council is keen to ensure that its residents are also involved in shaping the future management arrangements for the countryside estate, a wider public consultation exercise will begin in October.

It is anticipated that following this wider public consultation process, the County Council’s Cabinet will sign off the finalised new management options in February/ March 2016.

The second stage of the Review will be to implement the new alternative delivery options and it is anticipated that this work will begin in April 2016. This will involve looking at how the agreed delivery mechanisms relate to each site.

I have Attached the Three Documents attached to this report/review below.
Overall a terrible state of affairs to have to sell off our prize assets in Staffordshire, the future looks very bleak.

Cannock Chase 'not for sale', insists council.

Cannock Chase Country Park will not be sold off, council bosses have reassured residents concerned as a review of council-owned estates is held.
Staffordshire County Council has been forced to react to fears that the iconic beauty spot could be offloaded to a private company. Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling waded into the issue yesterday and vowed she would personally fight any sale of the site. She said: "If there were any such plans, I would oppose them wholeheartedly. "It is my firm belief that Cannock Chase must remain in public ownership.

I hope that everyone will remember that this kind of bollox is being foisted upon us because cuts in LOCAL expenditure have been imposed by CENTRAL government - and direct their ire accordingly. Whilst remembering that they voted for the barstards in the first place - heaven-fecking-help-us if Lefroy has made any sort of 'pledge' to save it.

Opposition to this must be made absolutely crystal - any ideas about how this may be done?

Apart from the obvious...
