Dash Cam! Camera for your car to record while driving

saw this in another thread:

I had a near miss at the traffic lights by New Look. It's a good job it was dark as I just caught a glimpse of the headlights coming towards me and had time to stop.

Dash cam! The way to go I've just got one

very impressed! i've obviously seen this sort of thing on Police Cops: Let's Bash Some Hippies on ITV4 etc, but never really thought about it for the retail/consumer market.. i guess it's pretty simple technology, so why not, eh? not only does it have practical applications (e.g. evidence for insurance claims), i dare say it would turn up the occasional gem worth sharing with friends, à la the above clip!

so - what are people's experiences of them? how do they work - do they constantly record the whole time you are driving, and if so to what medium? what resolution/frame rate/format/etc? how much are they, and does anyone have any recommendations for particular models?

i'm intrigued! defo interested in getting one, if they're not too expensive/impractical..

edit: original thread that i pinched the above video from is here: click me! if you want to comment on the video, rather than dash cams in general, then that thread is probably a better place for it :P

Hey db,

Got mine from 7dayshop.com – £25ish with an 8gb microSD card. It came with a car mount and bike handlebar mount, which was my initial reason for purchasing to film some mountain bike rides. Turns out it's a little shaky off-road on the handlebars of a mountain bike, makes you feels a little sick to watch it back. Got to find some way of attaching it to my cycle helmet.

After several close calls in the car on the way to work, none of which were my fault, I thought I'd use it for my daily commute to Stoke. The film above was one such journey home before Christmas (haven't figured out sorting the date and time yet!).

Image is 720 x 480 pixels and records to a micro SD card that slots in the back in 5 min files – you do lose a couple of seconds between files.
Day time picture is clearer than this night time footage.
The battery normally last over an hour but I plug mine in via the supplied USB lead to the car's 12V connector (cigarette lighter for the smokers out there)
It is supposed to write over the oldest files once the memory card is full but mine occasionally has a glitch which corrupts the card once it's full and I have to reformat it. I now tend to purge it every week or so before it gets to this stage.
Also, you have to manually press the record button at the start of your journey but for the price I am very happy.

thanks - blates going to look into these! microSD cards are cheap as chips these days, so i dare say you can get dash cams that record at a lower resolution (720 x 480 is overkill, imo) and you could squeeze quite a bit on a 32GB card :D

thanks! the fact the reviewer says "aks" instead of "ask" is a bonus, ya get me :boh:

interesting that it supports a maximum of 8GB microSD.. still, i'm sure that would be plenty for most purposes..

looks great, based on that review tbh.. i reckon i might get me sen one! :D

Morning peeps,

Just saw this on an e-mail and thought it might be of interest:

http://www.focalprice.com/ER0777B/G...dium=EM&utm_campaign=DM_1316ZT_2WEEK_ER0777B#

Looks nice and discreet, gets good reviews (mostly in Russian but a few in English), good price, mention of some youtube reviews in some reviews for more info, costs about £19 which seems good (paypal protection too).

Downsides, might take a couple of weeks to arrive and probably not much support / returns if it goes wrong.

It does also mention "Supports boot when car starts and shutdown when turn off" if this means it automatically starts recording when you turn on the ignition, that seems like a cracking feature that I would want.
