A notice has been put up to demolish 33 and partly demolish 34 Goalgate street. Don't know where this leaves Rymans who currently occupy 34, to turn it into residential units :(

So is it old buildings demolished to allow something more in keeping with Santander on the corner of Market Square ?

More in keeping with the Rymans building next to it, and it looks like, judging to the plan there would still be a shop where H Samuels was.

I wouldn't be against the H M Samuel being demolished. It's not a pretty building or in keeping the Rymans building next door. It will also improve the appearance of the building/ site to the rear.

I'm also in favour of more residential within the town centre.

I hope this application gets approved.

It's kind of sad though, H. M. Samuel has been there a long time. And I am well aware things have to move on, that's the way of the world. !! But nostalgia, for all its faults, really isn't that bad a thing. Sometimes you have to wonder if destruction actually works. :|

Wasn't that a pub back in the 70s?
No.
I understand that the Council had a policy of NOT having pubs in the main street ( Gaolgate Street, Greengate Street ) and that explains why when I moved here in 1973 there was only the Swan ( more a hotel ) and the Bear.

Wonder how long it'll be before m&s joins the destruction? Apparently all the fridges are still in there inside, as they were built into the building.
