Yes, better in every way compared to the 3100. Better sensor, autofocus system, image processing... in fact it's an upgraded D40x.

The 5100 also ships with the 18-55VR too :)
So it's worth the £500 odd? (I do have the money, just would prefer to pay as little as I have to =P)

Hmmm well that depends really... if it were my £500 then I would be looking at a used D90 with either the 18-105 or, also probably within budget, the 18-135 VRII - the D90 will blow anything in the brand new for £500 range out of the water. In fact I keep toying with buying a used one and then accidentally buying more car parts instead.

Having used the D90 it's nothing short of exceptional and £500 will find you a very tidy used one.

If I'd have known you had a budget of up to £500 then I'd have said this straight away!

Also dont worry about buying used, camera folk look after their kit and stuff from nikon, canon etc. is so well built it'll easily out last your expectations by a long time.

And.... it also does 1080p video recording, which with an SLR lens allows you to be very creative, this was all shot on an SLR using normal photographic lenses, including the on-car shots:

I don't like shopping online, I'm one of those people that has to look and feel something before they buy it. I'm assuming Peter Rogers is closed today so I'll have a look later in the week. Also, Curry's are doing the D5100 for £400!

I think I'll master taking stills first... I've not used an SLR much so need practice.

That's a shame as the D90 offers a lot of camera for the money (used). I don't know if the D90 is still available new, if it is then go and have a play somewhere, i think you'll be impressed. It's a 'prosumer' camera, so it's as easy to use as the 3100 you have already looked at and offers the advanced features of the D300 (a similar era 'professional' offering from nikon) for you to advance to as and when you want.
Another option would be gumtree and then you can actually go and look at the camera and try it before you buy, it's not a selling site, merely a classifieds site.

Also, I'd recommend a book called 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson ISBN 0817439390 - it's a great first book to get with the camera, in fact if I can find my copy you're welcome to borrow it - but it helps no end in my opinion.

Here's a thought - by buying second hand you are not directly contributing to Nikon/Canon etc., and as it's digital you are not bound to buy consumables from them.

Unless of course the seller is selling up to buy new equipment from the manufacturer.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
I was in Jessops in Birmingham on Friday buying myself a D7000  and the sales guy said they do not sell the D90 now but it is still available new and thought it would most likely be from online sources only.

I will most likely have a D40 for sale in the very near future...

Lunar should buy your D40, they're exceptional cameras and I started out with one intending to upgrade in the future, here I am still with the D40 seven years later. And I still love it :D

Congrats on the D7000!!

Not sure if you have acquired a camera yet, or the book I mentioned, however, when tidying up this morning I came across it. You're still welcome to borrow it if you like, I guarantee it is full of useful information and tips and tricks.

Can drop it off after work tomorrow onwards if convenient?

I don't have a camera yet, I was thinking maybe a bridge camera would do the trick (I'm too lazy to feck about with different lenses LOL) but haven't looked into it yet.
