Do we need another supermarket - Morrisons?

The Newsletter headlines are saying that there are going to be millions invested in Stafford through Morrisons, M&S, etc. The Borough Council has paid for a team of consultants to tell them that there are other shops wanting to come to Stafford. I wonder how much it cost the Borough Council to receive such information from the consultants. When I go into Stafford - the only shops which are surviving are those offering goods for £1. Why do we need another supermarket?

If it takes some custom away from the big three then why not... although it needs to be thought through i.e. where it goes....

I see a new build or 3 coming on before we get totally clogged up and get a bypass, rather than building one and having infrastructure in place. Cue major accident on M6!!

Do we "need" a theatre? Do we "need" a library? They are running a business... if they provide a service & people take them up on that service then good luck to them. Its supposed to be a free market, after all. Competition benefits the consumer at the end of the day... & it will create jobs. Wheres the downside? I dont see one. I really dont understand the "supermarket-hating" culture that seems to be trendy amongst some people these days.

..you are 100% correct, mr marwood it's no doubt still lamenting the demise of liptons and macfisheries, he and his ilk should embrace the eclectic possibilities to be enjoyed instead of negating in their esoteric manner.......

Never going to get a bypass. Too many greenies are against it (cue badly researched info about car use increasing with new roads) - see the last bypass plans and how that failed.

Also I can get you a report stating that SBC were opposed to the M6 and wanted all the traffic to travel from Creswell to Dunston via the town. Just as it seems to do every bloody friday when some incompetent numpty has a crash.

The highways department are useless. And they've just sold their home on Riverway, So expect some houses on that site soon.

I can't imagine why Morrisons would want to open in Stafford. I can't see how it could be financially viable. The Spar in town is struggling, M&S is always empty (apart from 4 old people who probably wandered in during the war), and Sainsburys is losing customers. Most people don't know that LIDL even exists, by the way.

Tesco and ASDA seem to have it covered. Any newcomer is, sadly, going to lose out.

An aside:
I was up in Preston last month, where all of the supermarkets are a long way out of town. none of the local taxi companies would pick up from the ASDA because they'd been banned from the site in favour of the overpriced shuttle bus service. F'king Stagecoach.

Disagree 1

Any non road building in Stafford is purely a financial decision

Disagree 2

Morrisons wont struggle in Stafford because its bottom end shopping ( just above Lidaldi )

We have an office next to that Asda; everytime I'm up and pop in it's absolutely packed; I think it shows out of town supermarkets do work. That said, when we moved out there from the town there were massive issues with employees getting in, hence the shuttle buses to the estate I believe.

New roads do generate new traffic, and the research on that is solid. If you think the opposite, let's see the research to the contrary...

Sheltered accommodation - was in the news and on here weeks ago.

Can't say I'm a fan of supermarkets, but I'm sure Morrisons have done their homework. You can't compare a tiddly Spar shop to a supermarket.

How is that Stagecoach's fault? If any ban is in place, that'd be up to Asda, who may well be paying towards the bus service. Of course taxis aren't overpriced...?

Most of the bus passengers probably using their free bus pass and quite happy...

Taxis are much better value than buses once there are more than 2 of you, we never use the bus when out with both kids as it is extortionate.

Depends on how far you're travelling I guess. The advantage of the bus is not having to listen to some taxi drivers inane rambling about what he's read in the Daily Mail this week.

And as far as supermarket shopping goes, if you're online the delivery charge is far less than a taxi would be and there's no faffing getting to and from the shops.

The taxi drops you door to door, when you want. The bus (for me anyway) is a 5 minute walk with shopping bags away from the house. Distance doesn't seem to matter much, even a short journey like the common to the red hill is cheaper in a taxi by almost half than getting a bus for 2 adults and 2 kids.

As long as public transport is prohibitively expensive people will use cars.

In answer to original post, no, we dont need another supermarket. Supermarket hating is perfectly understandable I would think, they are horrible soulless places and Tesco Stafford is an example of how not to fit one into a town as the effect on traffic/pedestrians/town is horrendous. Sainsbury's is the best of a bad bunch in Stafford in my opinion, but no we certainly do not NEED another supermarket. The environmental concerns exist at Sainsburys of course in that SBC decide to put a recycling centre right where it floods about 20 times a year, still, the free market rules. Hopefully Tom Sofa will try and do something about the recycle centre at Sainsburys.

I prefer Morrisons to the others TBH, they are cheap but seem to have a more interesting selection than Tesco/Asda. If there was one at J14 I'd use it, although I do most of my shopping day to day so doubt I'd do a big shop as such. I bet they could make them have a decent recycling center as part of the deal, and I'd rather than than the giant carpark that is Arnold Clarke.

Your darling France and Netherlands are littered with shopping experiences such as Netto, Aldi(Nord), Lidl, Auchan, Carrefour, Leclerc, Champion, Dirk van den Broek, Jan Linders, Jumbo, KC Markt, all 'bottom end' ......
