Dodgy builder?

Had a project start in January new kitchen and small extension to build a utility. Quote accepted and payments in instalments. About 40k

Kitchen complete but then planning needed which delayed things but work was due to be undertaken. Nearly all monies paid for works cut to now and builder had come back saying that there were additional expenses and will need another 20k to complete the utility extension.

So to fit a new kitchen and build a small utility 60k I'm thinking he taking the ...

Any thoughts?

Ask for a detailed breakdown, highlighting where their original quote was incorrect and why. If they take the piss name and shame, always good to know who to avoid.

Sounds expensive we had a small utility built about five years ago that was around 22k, kitchen was a different matter we found we had black ash and had to take the floors out and replace them, it's not a big kitchen but in total it didn't come to 60k, probably nearer 35 if my memory serves me right. I don't know exact figure because we had the whole down starts floor replace and new bathroom, rewiring boiler replaced and a few other jobs but the whole job was no more than 65k. I would definitely ask for a break down in price.
