E-mail received from Outlook

I'm on Windows 7 and , according to the screen that comes up when it first opens up, Outlook 2011 with a hotmail.com account that I use for the odd few things (had to create that to get a an additional e-mail account for a phone contract when Virgin messed with their system and the bloke couldn't get 2 contracts on the one address...otherwise I would just use my ntlworld address).

Just received this e-mail:

Dear user,
In a few weeks, we will be making some changes to our email services that might impact your @outlook.com, @hotmail, @live or @msn email account. These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.
In order to continue using Windows Live Mail 2012 to send and receive email for your account, you need to install the latest update published here.
If you use Windows Live Mail 2012 on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, we recommend that you switch to the built-in Mail app in Windows to stay connected and get the latest feature updates on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
Windows Live Essentials 2009 and 2011 are not supported any more, and you will need to update to Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 and use the Mail app, or use www.outlook.com. To learn more about the Mail app, please click here.
We also recommend all Windows Live Mail users on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10 and use the built-in Mail application to stay connected and get the latest feature updates.

The bit reading 'These changes will prevent your email from being delivered to the Windows Live Mail 2012 application that you use.' sounds like it's reckoning I'm on the 2012 version and not 2011 version?????

I keep getting prompted to update to Windows 10 each time the laptop is turned on. Should I be doing this anyway, or ok just to stick with Windows 7 whilst it is working ok?

Could do with a bit of advice on whether I should be clicking away at the links and downloading Windows 10 etc etc please..

(Or should I play safe and leave well alone , and plod on regardless until son comes home at xmas to sort it for me )

I don't like change either, while what I've got is working just fine at the moment I've just been clicking 'x' out of the constant invites to change to windows 10 for months now......

@staffordjas this only affects Windows Live Mail. If you have received this email but don't (or no longer) use Windows Live Mail you have nothing to worry about. If you DO use Windows Live Mail make sure it's the 2012 version and then just install the update that is linked. If you don't want to upgrade to Windows 10, keep ignoring it as you have been.

Thanks @wmrcomputers  That's good . (Hubby says thanks as well)

I was assuming Live Mail was another word for email  Just googled it ...still not much the wiser with all the computer jargon, but if it doesn't affect me....:D

Basically there are many email client programs which can handle emails. Some people opt to use none and just log in via webmail (this is when you access your email via your internet browser). Windows Live Mail is now a very old outdated client, but some people still use it. MOre recent clients are Outlook, thunderbird, Incredimail to name but a few.

By the sounds of it, you are either using Outlook client software which is part of Office, or you are using webmail by going to outlook.com

You may have received the email due to using Windows Live Mail many years ago, or they could just be sending the email to everyone regardless - I'm not sure which applies.

Thanks @wmrcomputers :) Happy now I know I can keep plodding on and shouldn't be affected.

As with everything else to do with computers....No idea what I'm using . Son set the hotmail account up for me, so that when I click on the email icon on my laptop it automatically brings up a page with both the ntlworld and hotmail email accounts on.

(Still have no idea how to get to either email accounts on my phone or any other device ..... just got my phone and tablet internet set up to go straight to the Stafford Forum .... think I'll keep son occupied while he's at home over xmas giving me a few lessons :D )

if you are getting pop ups asking to upgrade w10 and don't want them.....

you can delete it permanently (until Microsoft adds a new update) by opening C:\Windows\System32\GWX or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\GWX on 64-bit systems and deleting the GWX folder

or delete the windows update KB3035583 by start, cmd,
type this in WUSA /UNINSTALL /KB:3035583
Follow the on-screen prompts, and when complete type exit to close

To add to what @number9 has said, if uninstalling update KB3035583, check for Windows updates on restart as it will reappear in the list of optional updates. When it does... right click on it and hide the update so that it doesn't install again.

Thanks, son is back home tomorrow night so I will show him this. (In the meantime I'm touching nothing ;)...been relying on emailing son while his old phone was conked out. I can't make calls to his new phone for some reason, (keeps saying I'm on barred list, but nothing on his reject list) so might be relying on emails if my texts stop getting through to him as well..
