Is anyone going to The Edinburgh Festival?

We are off there tomorrow for a few days, looking forward to catching as many shows as we can.

I have never been before so I am really looking forward to it.

My 19 year old son Alex Hylton is putting on a stand up comedy show that he has written himself so if anyone is heading up there then please spend an hour checking out a fellow Staffordian. He is doing a two hander with Sarah Keyworth.

They have just done the first festival show today and it went well.

this show....

Glad his first show went well . Have a great weekend :)

Thanks @staffordjas

We sent off for the brochure of whats on at the fringe.

The brochure came back..its like a telephone directory!

So many shows to choose from so Alex and Sarah are hoping to pull the audiences in.

Until now, I had no idea how it worked.
Alex has been working 3 part time jobs as well as being at UNI to do this.

He has to pay for a room for a month in Edinburgh (not cheap in Aug!)
He has to pay for the venue for a month to put on his show.
Then all the thosands of fliers, the advertising etc.

I didnt realise what was involved until HE was involved.

Gosh, I didn't realise they had to pay for the venue and advertising etc :o I assumed the organisers took the ticket money , paid for all the other costs involved in putting it on , and paid the performers for putting on their acts.

Thats how it works at other places but not The Edinburgh Festival.

Unless you are a "big name" and have a manager, anyone putting on a show at Edinburgh has to organise a venue and pay for it themselves.

Alex is doing what is called "The Free Fringe"

He has paid up front for the venue and tickets are free.
If people like the show they pay what they think its worth on the way out.

Its how the new people do it.....they want to get people through the door and then hope that word gets round how brilliant they are.

Lots of the people you see on TV started out by doing their own show at Edinburgh.

Did you really give him a lift to go dogging?

Ah bless, you found an old you tube video.

That was about 18 months ago when he was just starting out, he was only just turned 18 in that.

He has spent lots of nights driving up and down the country to perform his act at various venues and is more "polished" now.

And NO I didnt give him a lift dogging.

Got here at lunchtime and did the hop on hop off bus.

Had a wander around and then went to see a comedy magician (Chris Dugdale) which was very clever and most enjoyable.

Mooched around the BBC tent and had a glass of wine.

Then we went to see a comedian called Andrew Watts which was ok.

Back at the hotel now which is near the castle so we can hear the fireworks from the tattoo.

Having a nightcap but we are exhausted so we will be having an early night ready for a full on day tomorrow.

This morning we did the culture and went to Holyrood Palace and Gardens, then walked back up the Royal Mile.
Later we went to see Alex and Sarah in their show ....the room was full which was lovely for them. They were both really funny and everyone had a good time.

Tried to get into see several shows tonight which were sold out so we ended up seeing Patrick Monaghan who I really enjoyed.
Then later we went to see a comedy showcase of 5 different comedians......all really good apart from one. Great night.

While wandering round today we saw Henning Wehn on the way to his venue eating fish and chips (who we are going to see tomorrow) and Ian Hislop reading his Fringe brochure.

Its really buzzing here, great atmosphere. We wanted to go to the tattoo but its sold out while we are here...we need to come again but plan it it better next time!

It's fab isn't it? Only ever been the once, a while ago, but you could have a blast without going to a single show - the whole town is abuzz.

Go at least once would be my advice.

I have managed to go up a couple of times, first visit was just a walk around, watching street theatre Ect and finished up in the Bombay bicycle club for an Indian. A few years later we tried to book and see a show but they were all full so ended up doing a Spooky walk which scared the bejesus out of various female members of our party and was highly enjoyable.

Yes, very much so.
We are having the most amazing time, although we both woke up today with aching feet.

Got up today and had a fab Scottish breakfast.
Headed out to watch lots of Street Theatre.

*******And we pay for it. ***********

Cant bear it when people stand and watch for 20 minuites and get entertained but walk off without even puting a pound in.
Thats just rude and mean.

Apart from the street theatre we watched 4 shows today.

101 clean jokes. Masai Graham

Quiz in my pants

Comedy in the dark

Henning Wehn.

Gorgeous Italian (food not man)

Very tired now. Glass of wine. Bed. Night night.

Plain rude, and unpardonably mean - you are quite, quite right.

I'm so jealous...

Keep us updated - will you be there for @Goldilox 's gigs?
