I have a friend of the tin-foil-hat, they're-all-to-get-me type, who refuses to have much to do with the evil internet and has stated that they will never join Facebook. They also have a very unusual name, probably unique, and I was surprised when a page appeared when I searched for it. They even have one 'friend', which turns out to be a person that they do know, but they swear that they never set the page up. I have sent a friend request, just to see if 'they' accept me.

There is no profile picture and, as a 'non-friend' (yet?), I have access to little else.

All rather odd.

When will facebook end? Will it end? When oh god will it stop?

I don't have it, don't want it but the entire world seems to revolve around it!

People have in-depth conversations about it, my work has asked me to update their 'page' (???), no one tells me anything as they assume I already know as they have already told the world via hashtag (???)

Is it a fad or is it here to stay?

It is a fad. It's popularity is already beginning to decline amongst the 'young' who have found newer and 'better' things out there.

It's OK for the 'right' things - the hardest user I have on my list is 83. The youths have pretty well buggered off and left 'us' to it - great.

Around 2000 when Friends Reunited was the modern day equivalent of FB someone created a profile pertaining to be me which said I was vacationing at Her Majesty's pleasure. I simple bit of SQL injection soon sorted out the jokers entry.

Arm or arse?

Neither grey matter. When you have worked you way through assembly, LISP, Cobol, Fortran,Forth, C, C++, Java, .Net and every other wave you have a fair idea about low level protocols and techniques.

Was it easy to work through LISP? My friend still can't fully master hers after many years of trying.

Functional programming takes a different kind of though process to an imperative language. Give it a try and you will soon see how ML based languages are simple and be willing to try things like LISP, Scheme and F#.
Infact given the fact that most things are immutable you will find concurrent high performance programming easier in such a language. There is a reason that C# and .Net has gained a lot of functional based libs like System.Linq and System.Linq.Expression... Maybe you have never used these namespaces or are abstracted from them, perhaps you prefer to emit IL to get you high performance stuff done. However in a lang such as LISP where you can express code as data and manipulate an abstract syntax tree at will you see realise that you have an vast amount of power available. Give it a try it's not all CONS CAR and CDR.
