I've been playing Fallout 4 since Christmas - the world is so massive, it takes ages to work through!

I ate the last stick of rock I had in less than an hour...

i started playing fallout 4 just before christmas - my first foray into "modern" gaming, and the first time i've owned a games console at all since winning a wii back in 2006.. suffice to say, my mind is blown by what computer games are like nowadays - although my only frame of reference is fallout 4, since this is the only game i have actually played since getting the xbox in december! i can't possibly imagine trying to get into another game at the same time, it's so massive and time consuming - i've been playing it for months and feel like i've only just scratched the surface..

i'm currently level 16, and still haven't managed to reach Diamond City.. every time i head in that direction i end up on some other side quest! just yesterday i finished one of the Brotherhood of Steel quests and rescued Paladin Brandis.. i think i'm finally about to hit Diamond City, though - when i eventually called it a day and saved my game, i was literally just outside the city, where i bumped into someone called Cricket who had some pretty tidy wares to sell

because i'm such a noob, most of the game's mechanics were completely new to me.. i've never played a game where you earn XP, for example (i realise this isn't a new thing, but i never was one for RPGs, preferring games like mario, mortal kombat, etc.), so had no real understanding of how this worked.. i only realised a few weeks ago that you can choose perks as soon as you level up - i assumed you had to work your way up the tree (or down the board, as it is in fallout 4), maxing out your base stat before you could move to the next level and claim that perk.. so for the first 10 levels or so i was just adding points to my base SPECIAL characteristics, and couldn't understand how people were getting all these cool perks that i was missing out on!

i think i understand it now, so i've got some pretty good perks going on which make life a lot easier.. i can't be arsed with companions, for example, so i unlocked Lone Wanderer yesterday, which allows you 300 carry weight instead of 250, which is well handy - and you can still keep Dogmeat as a companion.. i'm also much more of a slow, calculated player than a guns-blazing balls-out melee fighter, so i've got the Rifleman perk to increase damage done with non-automatic rifles.. i spend almost the entire game creeping around "hidden" and trying to take people out tactically from a distance, so this is ideal for me..

i only figured out what critical hits were last week, and how to pull them off - suffice to say, my sniping and general VATS kill rate has gone through the roof!

I love these "sandbox" games but I'm staggered at the size of this....I'm only at level 5 ( I think) and have been playing for 4 hours...as the old saying goes Ive quickly learned that I can't bring a flick-knife to a gun fight !
My biggest problem is that I just pick up anything and everything and in the end it just slows me down....anyway, back to Lexington and the Corvega Assembly Plant....

yeah, it's pretty amazing.. as i say i've been playing it for months (although only for about 8 hours a week, as i have a wife and baby daughter to keep happy) and i'm only now beginning to get my head round it.. i'm level 16, got some pretty tidy Legendary weapons and armour (only figured armour at last weekend), but i still haven't reached Diamond City (which, as i understand it, is basically the start of the main storyline)!

ditto, although it's less of a problem once you get into it and figure out what works best for you.. you can transfer loads of stuff to Dogmeat, so do that once you start to get weighed down.. have you established a settlement yet (e.g. Sanctuary)? if so, just fast travel there once you and Dogmeat are fully laden, dump all your stuff in the workbench, then fast travel back to wherever you want to be.. don't just dump junk, either - apparel you don't need, weapons you won't use, etc.. and you can whack it all in any workbench in your settlement, as they are a shared resource - i.e. if you put some aluminium in the weapons workbench, this will be available at all your workbenches on that settlement, so you can use it for weapons crafting, armour, chemicals, cooking, etc..

when looking in pipboy, you can click the left analogue stick to sort items in different ways - handy for putting all the heaviest stuff at the top, so you know what to stash/dump when you are looking to free some weight..

Didn't realise I could transfer to dogmeat but aware of the others... Haven't started building a settlement just yet, just getting into a rhythm with the bloody thing !! :)

The other half is resigned to losing me for a few hours each night....

It is addictive!

I'm sitting at Level 28 and I'm a fair way along the main quest line - I have 2 characters on the go though, and my second one is starting to become my main one as I've learnt a lot from my first game and the second one is going a lot better

I've built up a lot of settlements, and put the effort into actually making something out of each of them (fences around them, buildings, full defences etc) and I've got supply lines linking them all together (A massive help if you get into settlement building, as it lets you share building materials and resources between your settlements)

I've also romanced Piper with my first character, which gives a couple of extra perks - with my second character I'm travelling mainly with Dogmeat, although I'm getting annoyed at how often he keeps getting in the way so I'm planning on making a switch, probably to Cait so I can try and get her personal quest.

I've put a few videos up on YouTube, (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ15Cwox5lmNV_4yOV_wYyQ) but I've been struggling a bit to do the recordings properly with the PS4 so there's not that much on there.

ugh, i cannot be arsed with building settlements.. i did the bare minimum to complete the Sanctuary quest - i.e. bought a few beds, planted 1 plant for each settler, put a pre-fab defence down.. maybe it's all the years i spent watching mrs. db playing The Sims, but i just find building stuff soooo boring..

i've got a quest that's been there for weeks - Taking Point at Starlight or something like that - where i'm supposed to establish a new settlement and start building a radio beacon.. blates can't be arsed with that, so i'm just ignoring the quest altogether..

You only have to clear out some molerats and stick up a beacon to complete that one, dead easy - 10 minutes and you'll have it done.

I didn't think I'd get into settlement building, but I actually have - still break it up with other quests though!

Although it is worth mentioning that whenever to go and talk to Preston Garvey to complete the quest, you will almost always end up being given another similar one...

That does get annoying after a while

ah, in that case i might as well finish it off, because all i'll have to do is put the beacon up - i stumbled across Starlight long before the quest appeared, so killed the molerats and looted the area already.. i thought once the beacon was up it would start asking me to build other stuff and defences, but if it's just the beacon i might as well do it for the XP..

yeah, i avoid Preston when i go back to Sanctuary now because every time i bump into him he tells me about some more mates of his who need help!

i bumped into "Preston" on my way to the Bunker the other day, which i thought was odd.. he was acting really weird, like it was the first time he'd met me, and i thought it was a glitch at first.. i kept questioning him, and when i said i knew Preston he said "Oh shit!" and legged it lol.. i assumed he was a synth, so took him out with my sniper rifle as he bolted, but he bled red blood and didn't have synth parts on him.. a quick google reckons he's a Preston Impersonator!

You are not wrong - he's a scammer trying to get money out of you, there's a few of them dotted around - word of advice, remember that caps are the only valid currency ;)

Pretty sure it doesn't, only the beacon - quick way to get some XP if you've already cleared it :)

Spent the best part of 2 hours last night trying to build a settlement !! A couple of quick questions;

Whats the trigger for adding security to the settlement, and where on earth do I get my hands on circuits ?
Spent the last 45 minutes trying to clear out the bad guys at Corvega, not easy with the standard weapons !!

Corvega is a nightmare! There's so many of them.... grenades are your friend in there

You need to build defences like Guard Posts and Turrets - Guard Posts are easy, but remember that you need to assign a person to them before they add any value to your defence score (once you've built the post, go up to a settler whilst still in workshop mode, select them and then go back to the post and select it - this will assign the settler to the post)

Turrets are the best defence as the immediately add value to the defence score without needed people assigned to them - just trying to remember the best items to pick up to find circuits, I'll check it

Telephones, Hot Plates and any of the circuits from destroyed turrets are the best sources for circuitry :)

*Unless you buy a shipment from Trashcan Carla, although it'll cost you!

Thanks ! Makes sense now....I have stumbled across Trashcan Carla and was tempted to just kill her for the circuits but thought that would be bad....

Very!

She's good to trade with as she spends most of her time in Sanctuary Hills - you can trade a lot of your unneeded apparel, weapons, chems etc for junk items she has which contain the materials you need
