If anyone is thinking of keeping chickens for their own tasty fresh eggs, I am selling Point-Of-Lay Warrens for £10 each, including free advise, information & tips.

I'm also more than happy to allow a visit for viewing the hens / for setup ideas etc.

If anyone's interested please email me on wayne@wmrcomputers.co.uk
Thanks

I have been interested for a while, although now I own a cat, so maybe not that good an idea.

Anyway, I was wondering (stupid question)... when I go on holiday I usually put my cat in a cattery. What would one do with chickens if one were to go on holiday? Is there a such thing as a chickenery? (Told you it was a stupid question!)

Chickens scare me senseless. Beady eyes and sharp claws. The only good chicken is a Kentucky Fried Chicken...:pig:

@The Stafford Beast

Depending on your setup, there are ways to make it self-controlled for around a week, although most people ask a neighbour to feed them, water them and open/close at morning and night (which i'd assume they'd gladly do if you said they could keep all the eggs!)

Having a cat doesn't make it impossible, I can source small coops with a built in mini run that are ok for a couple of chickens for around £65 (yes, really), and they would be completely cat proof.

People always ask me "would you eat one of your own chickens" and I know I would for a special occassion, although dispatching would not be a job for me to perform personally

@Florence - they're so harmless you wouldn't believe!

NOTE FOR ADMIN - Just had a pre order for a few chickens from someone who apparently just typed "keeping chickens in stafford" in a search, and apparently this thread was top position - he never even knew Stafford Forum existed! I assume that's a good sign that the forum is climbing the search ladder! ;)

Ah! So that's what it is. I must look out for the chickens at closing time. I've never noticed them before. How unobservant of me.

Well our garden is so chuffing big we have the room, but I'm not a fan of eggs! Also not sure I could slaughter myself, so prob not a good idea to get for flesh. Saying that, we have a huge wasteground area next door, wonder if I could put pigs on that. Mmmmm, piglet :D

A friend of mine has just been given some chickens as a result of problems with the previous owner's cats. However, the problem was that the chickens bullied the cats mercilessly, even imprisoning them in the coop on several occasions.

How long does it take to grow a chicken to eating size? :strange:
If you're a snake, not long. There are a great many relevant videos on youtube, but I decided not to link to any of them. Yuk!

If anyone is interested in buying some hens (before next Wednesday 8th April), I'm selling off a few cheaper than usual as I'm downsizing a bit.

I've got 8 red stars, approx 60 weeks old so they've only been laying for about 6 months. If anyone is interested I'll do these at just £4 each (usually a tenner)

I've also got a few other breeds - 2 Ambers, 2 White Stars, 1 Light Sussex & 1 Blackrock. These are around the 9 months age. I usually sell these between £12 and £15 each. Will let them go for £8 a piece.

Which is tastiest? Or are they just for laying :strange:

On a serious note, what do you keep them in, and do they lay one egg a day usually? And what do you feed them and how much does it cost? Main issue I have is the local fox, seen him a few times near my garage.
