Which is tastiest? Or are they just for laying :strange:

On a serious note, what do you keep them in, and do they lay one egg a day usually? And what do you feed them and how much does it cost? Main issue I have is the local fox, seen him a few times near my garage.
You can keep them in just about anything, as long as it can be closed after dark (fox safety), and you feed them layers pellets. A sack is £6.60 locally and lasts a good while if only keeping a few. I use a sack a week but I have 30 odd hens!

Pretty much an egg a day yes, they do take a day off here and there though, and lay less as they get older. slows down to about 3 or 4 eggs a week at 3rd year.

To be honest it's not rocket science to keep them, but if anyone wants to see my setup they are welcome to. In fact... I might even have an Open Day so that everyone can come at once. lol

wanna see my snake?
You got any cage/run type things for sale if you're downsizing? Or are all yours together? Just an idea at present, would need to run it by my flatmates anyway!

Are they OK outside in the winter? Prob a silly question, just wouldn't want to wake up to some froxen chicks!

Nothing spare, but can direct you to a source of mini coop with run (suits 2 or 3 hens) for £65, or there's a really nice 8 hen setup on www.staffordads.co.uk for £100.

Yes they're fine even in winter!! lol. They huddle up more and are quite ok as long as no severe draughts. Mine loved scratting around in the snow.

Just been out to collect some more eggs, and had a lovely surprise off 2 of my hens.
Problem is the egg boxes won't shut!

I'm sure that they would also have the same midwife available throughout the process, and if does it all become just too much for them to cope with, then there is always the Caesarean option.

There was a piece on gardeners world last night about chickens, it has got me thinking about maybe giving it a go.
