So, it’s all kicked off (excuse the pun) with a few matches under way already.

Anyone else (apart from me) interested in it?
I’m not generally a massive football fan but bizarrely get totally over excited about the World Cup.

I’ve got my A2 wallchart takiing pride of place in the kitchen.
I’ve got World Cup bunting and England bunting.
Tablecloths, plates, flags, party picks and balloons all at the ready.

Tonight hubby and I watched the Portugal-Spain match and although we were rooting for Spain (our second home) I couldn’t fault that last goal that Ronaldo scored. It was a good match to watch.

I’m really looking forward to Monday night.

I love club football but have no interest in international at all. Mostly due to the media hype and subsequent scapegoat/effigy hanging...

Yes, I know, but apart from that.....

Tax fines and suspended prison sentences - excellent motivator

Anyone actually interested in the watching of the football?

I feckin' love the World Cup - my wall chart is loud 'n' proud right next to the television upon which i intend to watch as much football as any man could reasonably hope to ingest within such a wonderful time-frame.

I'm going to look to see if i have previously posted a description of one of the very best nights of my life - Italia '90 - and if i haven't already, then i will come back and do so.

It all started for me in Mexico '86 - the game against Poland and Lineker with his arm in a cast, the feeling that 'we' could actually do it.

The great thing about Internationals is that it is much more of a 'we' thing - Club football hasn't been like that for as long as one can remember. If you can buy the best, well look at that, you'll be the best. Jolly good show, well done and all that, but it's a little bit hollow isn't it?

You can't buy International players - well, i suppose you can a little bit, but it's still only a little bit - so it is the only arena that retains that air of purity.

Portugal were, on the whole, woeful earlier and yet they have one extraordinary footballer. They celebrated a draw as if it were a win.

The World Cup is a celebration, and one will celebrate throughout the duration. And i will support 'GOAL!'s and prowess and sportsmanship and The Beautiful Game.

* scurries off to search whether he's previously posted his Italia '90 story *

Hahahahahahahahaha *breathes* hahahahahaha - Germany.

Loving it so far - bubbles (and giant red balloons) being burst all over Russia, underdogs barking, nervousness, open play, isn't it?

Marvellous.

Viva Perú, ¡Carajo!

I get it, man, i really do, but if we could only experience any joy once the joylessness elsewhere has utterly and entirely ceased...

... we would spend our whole lives wanting for any joy whatsoever.

I had toast for breakfast, and i'm going to enjoy this circus.

So England tomorrow...

What's the betting we win something stupid - 0, and then everyone loses their collective shit and thinks England are going to win the whole shebang?

Not the hardest route to the Quarters for those with a wall chart to hand...

!

I had my heart in my mouth for most of the second half really really rooting for the underdogs.
So thrilled that Mexico beat them.
Disclaimer (I’ve nothing against Germany as a country, in fact I’ve got German friends), it’s just football, they’re so convinced that they’ll win, because they usually do, that’s it’s so joyful to watch another team outdo them.
Some wag on twitter commented that Mexico have built a wall around Germany and they’re making them pay for it.

Then on to the next match, Brazil v Switzerland.
It always used to be a joy watching Brazil, but somehow, yesterday watching Brazil play football wasn’t the wow experience that it used to be. In fact they were decidedly average. They may have been having an off day, we shall no doubt find out in the next few weeks.
