Fridge freezer does neither!

Got up this morning to realise the light in my fridge is off. The food is at room temperature, the top shelf of the freezer seems to be defrosted (other shelves seem OK but I probably won't trust the food now). I've checked the fuse, anything else before I bin it and buy another?

Socket is live, cable looks fine but yet to pull it fully out.

It came with the house so is over 10 years old, time for a replacement I guess.

The light should be in parallel with the pump - a great coincidence for them to fail together;

It sounds like a supply issue, after the socket.

The thermostats often have an 'off' position. Could it have got knocked?

The ones where the knob is on the side can sometimes get adjusted when something is pulled out and rubs against the knob.

Oooh, er...

An integrated one? We’ve generally found that people usually cheap out on them so they don’t last at all, when we moved in we had some really cheap brand fridge and freezer pair under the counter. They just go with whatever the kitchen comes with which is usually some own-brand rubbish instead of anything decent. Last year the fridge tried to burn the house down and today I’m to replace the freezer with a bin drawer to get some floor space back.

OK, that's embarrassing. Turns out the plug I traced back to the fridge freezer actually went under it and to the other freezer. The actual plug for the fridge freezer goes straight into the wall behind the microwave, and it was turned off. There was a jug in the way, it's handle the perfect height to push the switch. So no need for a new fridge freezer, but I have lost about £50 worth of food and a little more of my desire to live with flatmates.

Ah, but you will have an empty and fully working freezer.

It will make it much easier to dispose of them....

I try to persuade people to have unswitched sockets for fridge/freezer supplies, where possible....

After my recent house rewire, they fitted unswitched sockets for the washer , dryer and fridge freezer.
There are separate switches for all three in a block around waist level to the side of the cabinets with LED's so i know if one is inactive.

made it a lot easier and safer than having to use an extension socket previously.

I would be happy enough with a washer or drier on switched sockets, they tend to announce fairly clearly whether they are working or not, and are only required intermittently.

Cooling appliances are expected to be available continuously and only reveal their inoperation when it is too late - usually.

I had the same problem when I got the sack from Chernobyl. I mean … one tiny mistake. Talk about over reaction .. (no pun intended.):teef:

Also, labels on the tops of the plugs helps in potentially confusing situations.

Most of my older devices have Dymo labels on, but I'm starting to use the Brother-style labels now - clearer and a bit swisher-looking.

Well Gram I've spent hours 'monitoring' my plug … but it doesn't seem to have done anything unusual. :heyhey:
