Golden Orient

I do like them to take the plates away promptly, if trying a different dish I find a clean plate preferable.
Yes I can see why it would be appealing to some, but I don't think I'm at all suited to that kind of place.

The looks I got from other diners as I walked back to my seat with some SALAD on my plate were rather amusing! Something not in batter??!

I know what you mean. I had people saying things like 'you can fit more on your plate there, its all paid for so may as well'. Thing is, I didn't actually want more! Although a bag of chips looked appealing on my home :D

One of my pet gripes is people loading their plates and then not being able to finish it, it's such a waste and comes across as a bit rude to my mind.
Personally I like to have several small portions of different items, the whole point of a chinese, or indian for that matter, buffet to me is the variety of flavours and textures on offer.

Agreed! Thats why I was hoping the Malabar night actually was to sample the new menu, an Indian buffet would be great!

Only been a couple of times, my main issue is the way the food is handled by other customers - you see parents letting their kids play with and touch all the sweets that other people have to eat and i once saw an adult woman pick something out of the of one of the mains, take a bite, pull a face and then put what was left back in the tray - it made me feel quite ill if im honest and I've not been back

Abduls do an Indian buffet on a Sunday, but they bring it to your table apparently. All you can eat for £11 IIRC, although choice is limited. Several starters, plus a few basic curries.

I went to the Golden Orient last night and we'll never go again. It was horrible. The place wasn't busy but we felt like we were on a conveyer belt and the food just wasn't nice. Most of it was just scraps left over and a lot was dried up and nasty. Nothing seemed to have any taste either. The choice was dreadful too. Even the desert was dissapointing although the fruit did look nice and fresh. I had the toffee apple granny (apple pie with crumble and toffee on top) and sadly it was damp and soggy :(. It did my diet the world of good as i barely ate anything.

To top it off for some reason the taxi companies were swamped and we couldn't get a taxi, we walked back into Stafford. No big deal except was it just me or was last night bloody hot?
We got back just in time to alarm the poor blonde girl at PandA and down a refreshing cider before they closed.

Anyone tried Jimmy Spices in Sutton Coldfield? Same basic idea as a lot is help yourself, but in the middle of the food area is a chef or two who make stuff for you. At the chinese station its noodles, but you choose bits you want in them then hand it all to the bloke in the middle and he cooks it up for you. Then they do an indian area, where they are grilling meat and veg and it has curries round the sides. They also did pasta, salads, lots of deserts etc.

Brilliant if there are a few of you so have different tastes, as everyone gets something they like. Food isn't on par with Karma II but thats to be expected.

Similarly, Naughty Nells in Shifnal allows you to concoct your own combination dish from tables piled with raw ingredients and take it to chefs working on a huge barbecue thing. If there is a veggie in your group, they will happily take their mixture and cook it separately in the kitchen. You add rice, noodles, spices etc to taste and can go back up as often as your tummy can stomach. Everything is freshly cooked in front of you and if you don't like your dish, you only have yourself to blame! We haven't been for ages but it always used to be incredibly busy. There's a really nice Italian in Shifnal, too (restaurant, not bloke).

I like the Golden Orient, firstly it's all you can eat!! Secondly I am new to chinese food, so I find it great because I can try little bits of stuff, instead of having a massive plate of stuff I might not like.

The all you can eat place? I thought it was sub-standard crap but I'm not a fan of chinese anyway! I found those who value quantity love it, those who tend to eat less prefer other places. Most people I know prefer indian food though, which I suspect colours our judgement significantly!

This.

Essence Of The Orient is much nicer, or if you can travel and want buffet the place in Wolverhampton is much better, the one near to Beaties etc. We popped in there for Lunch a couple of weeks ago, really tasty food, as opposed to the tasteless paste Golden Orient had on the one time we went there. Oh, and they have a proper birthday cake type option at a reasonable price.

Does anyone know if they still do the £5 takeaway buffet boxes? Their site feels like it hasn’t been updated in about 2 years…

No idea

But they are always busy and the food is consistently good

A favourite venue for the Alton Towers crowd staying over in Stafford
