Good places to live in Stafford

Karter

A few posts under my belt
Hi all,
Hope you don't mind me barging onto the forum and asking questions straight away!
I'm moving to Stafford but don't know it that well at all. Have looked at heaps of properties (budget under £115k) and have two favourites - one on Alliance Street (terrace, Eccleshall Rd end) and one on Tixall Rd (terrace, town end, nr Cull Ave). There is also one in Castletown but i'm a bit reluctant for various reasons, although the area is clearly great.
Any advice? I'm a young-ish female and will be living alone a lot of the time so need it to be a safe area (have reservations about Alliance St therefore - should I have?). I also like peace and quiet!
Thanks for any advice. I'm finding it really hard to get my head around where all the different areas of Stafford are - anyone know of a map with them all on?
Thanks,
Karter

Welcome to Stafford Karter

The properties you suggest sound like they may all be older houses which could mean additional costs once the property is bought

Avoiding the drunks walk home from town is always a good move so staying clear of the main roads is a good idea for quiet

None of the areas is a 'bad' area as far as I know, others may advise with better knowledge

I would avoid one bed apartments and if possible apartments altogether as these are likely to drop in price even further

Clearly your budget will limit you but best advise is to spend as much time around the areas you think most likely you will buy. This includes being there on a weekend at chucking out time etc etc , so you have a good idea of the area and any potential problems

Maybe rent for a couple of months first so you then get to know the town before committing to a purchase

Ask away - amongst the nonsense there are many kind people here

Your approach seems to be a suitable one. Alliance Street did have an aura of scallywaggery at one time. Castletown does have a wierdo element, as you'll soon find out on here, but they're mostly harmless. I once lived on Tixall Road and so that is obviously OK. Have a wander round at night and see what you think then.

Eccy road end of alliance st. no probs there, sadly 115grand wunna go far in this town however if that's your deposit then you should be ok. good advice though have a look around after dark. Just so happens it's a speciality of mine, happy hunting......

A friend of mine lived at the Eccleshall Road of Alliance Street for a few years, it's fine and very peaceful there; just don't go to the Stone Road end!

As Treasurer of the Castletown Residents Association, I would say Castletown is a good area to live, I have been here over 20 years, and with a residents parking scheme to be implemented in the not too distant future, I would highly recommend you giving this area a second thought.

Good luck with your choices, and welcome to the forum.

I lived on the Eccleshall Road a few years ago, quite near Alliance Street. Perfectly nice area then, but as Lucy said, be careful around the Stone Road end. I recommend a stab vest and a ferocious dog. :)

Even the Treasurer of the Castletown Residents' Association recommends having second thoughts - what sort of advert is that?!

The properties on the south side of Tixall Road are generally a better build if I remember correctly

You may also have the option of letting a room to a hospital worker if budgets got tight

Castletown is obviously handy for a rail commute if you work outside of the town but even with a new parking scheme I doubt all will be accommodated happily.

Doxey is not always thought of as a good area but parts have a village feel to it and the crescent is fairly quiet

Never knew 'Broad Eye' was a district yet i'm sure it would impress folk who dunna know about it.....

As can be seen here, there was rather more housing in the vicinity in the old days. Maybe enough to justify being called an area in its own right? Now there's just the four houses in Broad Eye itself, plus whatever habitation there is associated with the Chip Shop, etc.

Incidentally, does anybody know of any other urban windmills?

alright karter, welcome to stafford forum :D:up:

out of all the places mentioned, i'd defo recommend castletown.. i don't live there me sen, but know plenty of people who do (or who have in the past) and it gets nothing but glowing reports.. there's a real sense of community there, and it's handy for just about everything!

Except parking ;)

TBH I'd love to live in Castletown, although I do like where I am now (Sandon Road). If things go well this evening I may be looking for a new place myself, for about the same budget. Fight you for them! :D
