Heating

We need a new boiler but we’re on oil so it’s not a cheap fix by any stretch of the imagination, quotes are coming in at +£5K because the boilers themselves are twice the price and it’s considered specialist work. Also the oil tank is very unsightly.

We can get an underground gas tank in for very little cost, with replacement boilers being similar in price to those for mains gas. Hubby can’t sit still for 30 seconds so having been at home for a couple of days has decided to rip the garden apart, the timing should be good, though lead times are no longer what they would have been and the thought of going all summer with a huge hole in the garden is not a prospect I relish.

Installation costs, environmental impact and running costs are all factors in this. Does anyone have any experience with alternative options, are electric radiators an economical option? Do solar panels and/or ground source heating actually work all winter and more importantly how do the work, would we still need a boiler?

The web is a minefield of potential misinformation and I’m struggling to find coherent unbiased information. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of impartial and factual advice if possible please.

We had a new oil boiler for £3k about 3 years ago. Do you need a special system?

Depends on the property type / layout but have you considered a split aircon system ?
They are the Mose efficient type of heating and of course will cool as well.
Fairly easy to install compared to anything else.

You really need proper advise to go through your options. I'd recommend Brain Brothers (haven't got their details at hand). Decent, honest guys. We've used them a few times for various jobs, always been very happy with everything.
They're still working safely at present.
