Help! Bike making strange noise while peddling

Right, need advice please!

My bike is making very odd noises, sounds like a bearing and its always when the peddles hit the same position. I can feel a click, as if a ball is missing from the bearing, then its OK again til the next revolution. I'm assuming its the bearing in my bottom bracket, but as I've never stripped down a bike properly I have no idea and I'm not there to look. If I'm going to strip it I may as well replace them anyway, so what do I need? If it helps I have one of these:

Also, I need a new rear tyre. Any comments on this one?

It says that you have a cartridge bearing, which should be easier to do than the old-style built-up cup bearings, as long as you can get a replacement in the right size. Try it with the chain on different rings, it might just be a dud tooth. It's not impossible that it's a pedal bearing - does it do it if you rotate it without using the pedals? I have a puller for crank arms if you need it, although there are various odd fittings out there now.

It does sound like it's your BB - i'm not expert at such matters but the BB on your bike is a sealed cartridge so i suspect you'd have to replace the whole unit rather than replace bearings. Go into the Specialized store in town and ask their advive if you have the time.

As for the tyre, it depends what you use the bike for - it looks a bit hardcore to me.

Good stuff, there. I should have mentioned the loose crank-arm scenario, that's quite a common situation.

I know sod all about these things, so I should probably test the pedals out too before I start buying bits. Yeah, maybe I should just go and see them in the store. Gives me an excuse to look at bike porn! As for the tyre, you may be right. I'm 95% road anyway, maybe I should just get slicks!

Yes - do you really want a nice draggy 2.50 tyre on the back that weighs more than a car?

For your type of riding I think this 1.90 semi-slick weighing less than half of the other one would suit your ride style much more methinks!

Cheers admin!

Ah, right. Cheers mate, they do seem ideal and are pretty light. I was looking at some slicks that were nearly 3x that weight! (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=33367)

That looks a good compromise tyre at a fine price. Schwalbe products can often be a little bit smaller on the bead diameter than most and so may be a little more fiddly to get to sit right, but they're better for it in the long run.

Turns out my bottom bracket was loose. Bloke in Specialized told me what was wrong and how to fix it, but I asked him how much for him to do it and he said £7.50. Sorted, by the time I'd finished in asda my bike was on the road again. Just ordered the tyres, hopefully my knee will hold out this year.

In general the BB chainset needs tightening after some initial use, takes a couple of minutes, 7.50 aint bad, Specialised are not rip off merchants and they are honest and decent, in saying that they are expensive but this is reflective of the current climate for cycling, the service they provide, bringing cycling into the 21st Century with their swish, modern and jazzy premises and the expertise of a World Class ex professional Mountain Biker who is a GB MTB Coach and a commentator for Eurosport

I was happy with that price, it may be a 5 minute job for them but it isn't for me (at the min anyway), and I just wanted my bike working. I've been putting off looking at it for about a month now, and boy do my thighs feel tight after a ride today. I'm very out of practice!
