Help With Nokia Lumia - Sending Photos

I am actually going to scream!

I have had a new phone for Christmas - it is a Nokia Lumia 530.

I am on Giffgaff and I have credit.

I want to send/ receive pictures via text.

Giffgaff work on a forum based advice center and they all just speak to fast for me and use language I just don't understand!

I have tried updating the APN settings - I have tried downloading various apps - to then be told the app doesn't work anyway!

I was told that I need to turn off my WIFI and use my data to get photos.

I don't use internet outside of the house - I connect to my WIFI only - I do have a small amount of data in my allowance but don't understand why my mum who had the oldest brick phone in the world can send/ receive photos without internet/ data and why I then have to pay for it?

I did what they said and turned my WIFI off and data on - and low and behold it worked!

However five mins later when my over enthusiastic mum sent me another photo - it wouldn't work!

Also my other half can send/ receive photos happily without having to turn wifi off/ data on etc etc???

I'm just about ready to throw this piece of crap in the bin and dig out my beloved purple brick phone!

Please help - but please don't use big words!

Sob sob sob! xxxx

I too wish I could help hun, but never touched a Nokia Lumia. I've heard others say similar things though.

First of all, I'd look into changing your MMS settings. If your mum sends picture messages via text, then those are called MMS messages. A long shot but worth a try. Giffgaff's MMS settings can be found here if you scroll down to the part that says about manual settings. Alternatively try sending a text saying SETTINGS to 2020 first and saving the settings if they come through to your phone.

I have a Lumia 1020 - my advice would be forget MMS - the easiest way around is to use Whats App - free and available for Lumia phones and easy to attach pictures to messages

I don't get MMS on my Nexus without having data switched on either, so I don't think it's a specific Lumia issue.

MMS is usually sent using the networks mobile data service. Your mums "old brick phone" will be sending the MMS using data although in a simpler way than a smartphone.

Thankyou all - seems to be working - but what a pain in the ass!

Its been explained to me that it's because I'm on Giffgaff - when my mum sends a photo it sends it to a Giffgaff box and then I have to pay using my data to get it from that box.

Just what a ball ache!

My mums an artist so she likes to send me pictures of what shes up to - else I just wouldn't bother!

Luckily I get 20 somethinganothers of data and it only seems to use 0.44 of these per photo so I think I should be okay!

Thankyou xxx

@That-Crazy-Rat-Lady The £5 goodybag is working wonders for me too since I switched network a few days ago. Started with 60 minutes and now have 75! 20Mb data is of no concern as I usually only use data when on wifi at home, at the 300 texts should cover me too. Cracking!!

It's fab!
I just cant understand why people are paying £40+ for contracts and such when Giffgaff is so cheap!
However I do worry a little as Giffgaff are run by 02 if I remember correctly - who have just been bought out buy Three -
I do hope this doesn't change anything???

I hadnt considered that myself, although giffgaff are now so huge, three will probably want to keep their custom.

People pay money for contracts because they get phones "free".

Mine was contract, but now ended and I'm still happy with phone. My choices were..
1. Get a new phone and continue paying a bill in the region of £25 to £30 per month
2. Keep same phone and continue to pay £17 per month
3. Leave o2 and join giffgaff and pay £5 per month.

Winner winner.....

People finance their phone handset in that price and get more minutes, texts and data. I suppose it all depends on what you need/want.
Yes and no. Financing the phone is only a portion of that cost. Yes if you have no other way of buying the phone you want outright it's the only option, but if you own your phone then fab deals are available with giffgaff even if you need much more mins and data. For the same price I paid to o2 (not including the phone finance part) giffgaff would give me unlimited data compared to the 1GB that o2 gave me.
