@gk141054 - I decided during my first 2 months of the £10 sign up deal to upgrade to superspeeds thinking i'd still get the introductory price, but no. Reverted a couple of months on back to 2 meg and been billed 17 / 18 quid ever since. So i only got 2 months of introductory offer!! (so i know how you feel)

Just ring them back WMR and tell them £17 / £18 is too much for 2 meg and they should put you back to £10 quite easily.
yeah, seriously wmr that's more your fault than VM's! if they are billing you incorrectly you shouldn't just put up with it..

i pay £17 for 10mb, which was an introductory offer.. it ran out last month, so they bumped me up to £25 automatically.. i phoned them right away, got through to a scottish lass, said there was no way i was paying that, so she said "ok" and knocked it back down to £17! i was surprised at how easy it was..

get on the blower!

I have no idea what we have, but its £17pm. Its also currently unused, as I have no idea where I packed the router!

I had the opposite problem to shoes, single occupancy house they insisted was a block of flats. Idiots.

Ah screw this!! We already have TWO accounts in the house! Yes, two of my house mates have Virgin Media already. Well basically they WILL be installing it soon, with at least 3 months free, sorting out my credit report and a written apology.

Apparently they stopped allowing this in May this year. Well one of these were installed in August. Going to call them at lunch and see what they have to say on the matter. :fap: ers

i'm confused - is this what they have actually confirmed, or is this just what you are hoping to get?

also, how can you not know that there are two other VM accounts in the house?? do you not speak to your housemates ever?? lol

I only moved in 4 weeks ago mate, and have hardly been there, only just gettin to know them. They haven't confirmed it but essentially they have lied to me, added a mark on my credit history and wasted my time. When BT did this I threatened media action (as a last resort) and for some reason they got scared and gave me an unbelieveable amount of free stuff. When that was done i went to virgin

If not then I will see if I can get my old modem back of tek and get a length of decent coax and a splitter.

No fear dude, I will win. I ain't gonna be beaten by a bearded bilionaire who started with nothing and worked his way to the top who thinks he's better than me

Edit both my house mates are on 2MB. Does anyone know what the port's limit is? I'm sure it used to be 38 MB/s but that could have changed since ntl: days.

Finally got round to phoning Virgin Media today.

As others here suggested, i simply said that £18 a month was far too expensive for just 2Mb broadband, and the chap instantly knocked it down to £11. He said i've also got a credit on the current paid month of about £6.50, so my next bill should only be about £4.50. SWEET!!!

The only thing he said is that it will revert back to regular price after 6 months, so just call again when it does and they can put it back to 11 again for another 6 months and so on.

Basically, i think thats an admission to overcharging in the first place, but nevertheless I am happy with the result!!

Cheers forumites! ;)

I use TalkTalk and strangely enough find them to be OK. It's £21 a month for phone line, net and all calls ( UK, EU, North America and Oz/ NZ ). It works well enough for me, but I don't do anything too exotic, not being a particularly nerdy type.

I know, that's what I said. I've had it with VM. When the contract is up, I'm going elsewhere, even if I have to cough up for a BT line. I'll go to someone who when they say unlimited, means unlimited, instead of 'unlimited up until the point you actually start using all the bandwidth you are paying for, then it becomes limited'. They've even said that although they'll be no traffic shaping initially on their new 50mb service, there may well be as uptake rises. AND now they'll throttle BitTorrent users.

What EXACTLY do they think a home user is going to be using a 50mb line for if it's not BitTorrent?

I've heard good things about Be and Zen. Can anyone confirm?

To be honest I could live without the internet if I'm not allowed Bit Torrent. Hell will freeze over before I do business with BT again.

God knows where I'll get music / tv / films from, if they honestly think I'm paying the extortionate prices for media then they're wrong. If an album cost £3 I'd consider it. If a DVD was £3 I'd consider it. Currently though, no.

I can't think of a use for a 50MB line. I know a couple of people with the 20MB and have NEVER maxed it out.

But with 50mb you can dowload an album in, like, 1 FEMTOSECOND!* With 20mb, it takes at least a nanosecond.

*From legal sources only, of course.

In my experience these super duper legit services are slower than my gran on the stairs. With bit torrent you can easily get >1MB/s and its 'free'.

But yeah I see what you're saying, its very lucritive - they uncap to 50MB/s and charge an arm and a leg safe in the knowledge it will never be fully used so they don't have to upgrade their systems so quickly.

That's pretty much the crux of it - to separate fools and their money. People will pay for it because it sounds good and important - without ever thinking about how they'll use it - and Branson gets their cash for doing very little. If they're upgrading their infrastructure, perhaps they should think about making it so they can handle their existing accounts, without traffic shaping, Torrent caps, and the unholy dollop of quim that they call customer services.

Ditto, my general surfing is such a minuscule amount that if they stop me usint torrents then I might as well just get mobile broadband @ £7.50 a month for 7.5GB allowance.

If that happens then there is no reason to stay with Virgin at all so i'll cancel my BB and TV and just go to Sky for my TV.

Bunch of arse's have p*ssed me off now...

Thats what I'm going to do there are lots of deals out there with free netbooks and I think 3 are even offering a free laptop with one contract. Well that's going to get ebayed, and will probably cover half the cost of the subscription.

3 do offer a free lappy, but its an expensive deal TBH. Who does the 7.5Gb for £7.50? Apparently I can get half price mobile BB as I'm a 3 customer, but I think its still double that?

@ Tek,

That deal was with Three also on an 18 month contract.... I got it for my folks although I think it has finished for now but pops back up from time to time.
