On the pop up keyboard, do you have a microphone icon to the left of the space bar?

EDIT: Just read that forum, I'm on tmobile so its not that. I'm also on a Milestone, so its not just for the nexus. Try installing Google Translate as that has all the needed binaries, may kick it to life perhaps?
if you google "htc desire voice to text" all of the links seem to suggest that t-mobile has deliberately crippled voice to text on the desire :(

i defo don't have a microphone butan..

Shade :(

Why just on the desire though I wonder, as my Milestone is fine.

EDIT: Call them and kick off, say the phone must be defective. See if they admit to owt, or if you can get some freebies off them.

it's not "hard branded", as in it doesn't have t-mobile written anywhere on the device itself (whereas the gf's hero has "t-mobile" written by the earpiece, where mine says "htc").. but yeah, it's got t-mobile firmware on..

is yours not on t-mobile then gk? i just assumed it was.. or have you rooted it and installed some crazy customer firmware? is this recommended, and if so for what reasons?

Its on t-mobile but I got it through Mobile Phones Direct rather than direct from T-Mob.

Anyway have installed Google Translate and still no microphone button appears which is strange... do I need to install something else too?

I dunno, I installed translate on 2.01 and it added that option to a few bits, but the KB part only appeared in 2.1. No idea why your phone would get crippled?

yeah yours will be the same as mine then.. no t-mobile hard-branding, but you get a little pink circle when you first turn it on, followed briefly by the t-mobile logo, then it's into usual htc/android territory..

as per my other posts, t-mobile have deliberately removed voice-to-text functionality on the desire, apparently.. you can hack it on with various procedures like this one but tbh i'm just gonna wait and hope that t-mobile stop being gaylords with a future update..

Nope, none of that hulabaloo..... as I said, its unlocked and UNBRANDRD (on the software and hardware)

So I wouldn't have expected this to apply:

hmm, the plot thickens.. do you know what firmware you've got then? is it just stock htc bizniz?

if so, that's even more bizarre, because all the threads i've read seem absolutely convinced that this is a feature deliberately locked down by t-mobile, and there are vids on youtube and stuff of pre-release models being shown off at trade shows which clearly have the voice-to-text function on the stock firmware :strange:

Getting mine delivered today, just hoping it's as good as it seems to be!

Speech to text would definitely bring a whole new level to drunken text messages! From what I've read, it's a feature of Android 2.1, but will find out later if mine has it. Wonder if it supports yam yam...

So the Desire just can't do speech to text? Even in google translate?
there are lots of threads on various forums, as well as youtube videos, suggesting that the hardware is capable of it.. indeed, as per the link in one of my previous posts, you can hack voice-to-text onto the desire by installing a different keyboard - so it would seem that the only reason voice-to-text isn't available is because t-mobile/htc have deliberately crippled it by removing the mic button from the keyboard!

edit: hmm, if you look at the FAQ on htc's site there is no mention of a mic button, or voice-to-text function!

So the HTC Desire is not fully compatible with the android OS? Bit of a fook up, I thought HTC were good at this shiz?

depends what you mean.. remember that htc devices don't come with "vanilla" android, they have htc sense on the top..

so, yes, in a sense this is an incompatibility between the two, in that htc devices use an htc keyboard instead of the vanilla android one, and the htc keyboard doesn't have a mic button..

this seems to be the current favourite way to get speech-to-text on the desire.. i might try it out if the 2.2 update doesn't fix it officially..

Do other phones with the Sense UI on them get speech? Just wondering if its phone specific or just their UI.

no, all phones with htc sense are missing the speech-to-text functionality..
