I can't believe they're remaking...

i clicked on this thread fully intending to reply along the lines of "why do people get a bee in their bonnet when someone remakes their precious favourite films??" - see this thread from aaaages ago when we had a similar discussion..

however, i was surprised when i found myself (given my vehemence in the above linked thread) agreeing with you on many counts.. i really cannot possibly imagine a remake of:

the following, i can imagine them doing, but they would be shit.. as in, i can picture in my head how modern day production studios would make them look, and it ain't pretty:

don't get me wrong, i absolutely love most of the films you have mentioned, but i have absolutely no problem with a brilliant film idea being brought up to date, properly, with a massive budget, excellent director, and modern special effects..

i can only imagine how awesome all of those latter films quoted above would be if done properly with today's resources

Just a couple of points there db

One of the films you say should be a good remake would IMHO be total Kack!! That being 'Short Circuit'. I say this only because it turns out that the Director is the same guy that done 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop'!!!!

And another that you aren't looking forward to, may just be an instant classic. The Addams Family is being taken on by Tim Burton (Perfect match if you ask me). You do however have to be a Tim Burton fan to agree with that that though!!

I am however, pretty apprehensive about a 'Logan's Run' remake. Will they be able to capture the essence of the original movie, it being years ahead of its time and all??

ah, i didn't actually look at the article you linked - my post was purely from a rhetorical point of view, i wasn't thinking about the actual remakes that were planned, or who might be directing/starring/etc! i agree that, should Short Circuit be re-made by whoever did Mall Cop, it would be a travesty.. to make up for it, have this happy hardcore classic that uses the short circuit theme tune:

DJ Stompy - Come & Follow Me

(the remixes are blates loads better but i can't find any of them on youtube)

i agree burton would make a good stab at an addams family remake, and there would blates be a cameo (if not a major part) by christina ricci, which can't be a bad thing

ARRRGH DON'T TOUCH SHORT CIRCUIT!!!! <And in a slightly quieter voice> Or Robocop

Got to admit though, I really, really enjoyed the new A Team film, so re-makes can be ok I suppose.

I find myself in agreement, mostly, with Mr. Gloop on this
The point is have 'ideas' really dried up to such an extent that they keep having to remake old films (and not all of them are classics) to put bums on seats.
You can almost smell the fear can't you?

Much of the above list contains films that were, if being charitable, mediocre in the first instance, Romancing the Stone ffs!?! but i guess some could be better (given the debacle that was Judge Dredd that is surely ripe for the bettering) for a reworking.

The 'thing' that baffles above all is how we live in exciting and moving times - one could not expect Hollywood to keep up with the hurly-burly of events - and yet at the same time the American film industry retreats into an era of introspection.

Astro-boy's most recent posting is most interesting in that respect. :boh:

I think there are many good points here, both for and against movie remakes....and with good reason too. We know all to well what a disaster some of these reincarnations can turn out to be, and should have been left well alone. Yet they continue to drudge through the archives to dust off dusty old scripts, because some young upcoming director thinks he can improve on the original or has a new interpretation of the storyline.

But this is by no means something new. Film remakes have been around since film makers wanted to update their creations in all new 'colour'. Even Alfred Hitchcock remade 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' and even that classic of all Westerns 'The Magnificent Seven' is a remake, of 'The Seven Samurai'.

Maybe it's not a case of there not being enough ideas out there, and that there are way to many remakes, but what if there is in fact that many films out there ....it just seems that way??

The Judge Dredd film suffered a multiple of sins but the one that infuriated me the most was the fact that they knew they were making a turkey so tried to pack as many characters in as they could. At least with say, Batman, they spread the characters out a little.

Suprised Johnny Alpha and Robo Hunter didn't pop up for good measure

A series of films like the latest Batman ones may well be the ideal
