Thanks for looking at the Inns and Alehouses of Stafford website guys www.john-connor.co.uk thanks to the hits it is now at number 2 on page 2 of Google if you type in' history of Stafford pubs'. Strange but if you type in 'history of pubs in Stafford' it is towards the bottom. C'mon forumites help the website get onto Google page 1, keep the momentum going.

A Google Search 'history of Stafford pubs' has www.john-connor.co.uk - The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford now on page 1. As the website hits moves up so does the Google ranking. Apparently links from other sites is a major factor of ranking, being treated as a voting system.

Just saw this post on the Live in Joxer Brady's Facebook Page

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knew the history of the name of the pub BEFORE it was called the chains in the 50's? ANY help is most welcome.

I've just asked an 83 year old who can't remember it ever being called anything else..

..but, there could be reasons for that..

My memory of it goes back 195? and it was the chains then, possibly from the courts time (when were they built?) and prisoners in chains?

http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-384033-the-chains-public-house-staffordshire it looks like the building was listed in 1951 as the chains so I would imagine its name was established well before that, there is an local urban myth that its called the chains as that was where a condemned prisoner due execution from the adjacent court would be taken and chained to get drunk before they were taken to the gallows - apparently chaining facilities available in the pub, there are the secure cell doors at the side of the court which would make the closest pub to that court. The other pub (urban myth) known for this is the rose & crown which is on the same street to the cell exit door of the other court.

I would ask at the tourist info in the high house who to speak to, I'm sure there must be a department that deals with local historical info at the borough council or county - the people that organise the ghost walks at Halloween from the council seem to know an awful lot of local history.

My Uncle Eddie Trainor and Joyce Trainor kept the Chains at the beginning of the 50's and there was no record of it being called anything else

I can confirm Joxers has had other, far more awesome names than The Chains, but I am sworn to secrecy since they are in Mr. Connors book, which I look forward to purchasing when it's available.

John will be present at the CAMRA presentation of Pub of the Month award to the Luckpenny, Crab Lane, Stafford on Thursday, 4 October 2013 (9pm)
There will be an opportunity to purchase Book 1 and to talk about the historical research that went into the compilation of his two books
