Inverted iPhone pictures.

On my other forum, we have a chap who just cannot get his pictures on without them being inverted - it has become quite a running joke now, he even tried holding the phone upside-down in case it was confused, but they always appear on the screen inverted, no matter what he does - any ideas?

It doesn't seem to happen to anybody else on there.

On occasions, they are only 90 degrees out......

It happens to me occasionally, if it does I display the image in Windows picture and fax viewer. There are rotation option buttons on that which allow manual photo rotation, when used for rotation it warns that information may be lost/changed, agree, and rotate image and then back to the angle you require. This new rotation info must be saved with the image and when re loaded onto a forum it should display correctly.

You might find this article useful if he is still using iOS 5

I simply open pictures in Windows Photo Viewer, which usually shows them the right way up (strangely). I then rotate them so that it shows them the wrong way, click the forward arrow at the bottom to move onto the next picture in the folder etc. Then on the second pass I rotate them the right way. Once I've done this they are the correct rotation no matter which program opens them.

Still a pain but it works for me.

He has got to be using an old version of iOS as it doesn't happen any more. There was a 'correct' way to hold the iPhone when this was happening, can't remember though as it was ages ago.

I still have the problem and I'm using the latest iOS

The problem explained in that video isn't quite what I get. The photo appears as it should on the iphone, even if I send it to someone. However, once transferred to the PC, certain apps will open the picture the wrong way up - if that makes sense.

Yes - I think that is what is happening to the sufferer - everything is OK, until he sends them to the Forum - it doesn't seem to affect anybody else on there, though.

My fix above was possibly the best short term method then. It's what is working for me. It probably does affect others that have already found their own work-around and just can't be bothered to explain it. ;)

I have pointed that out to him, but I rather hope that it doesn't work - it has become rather a tradition....

Just incase he's on Windows 10 - Windows picture viewer isn't there, at least visibly, but I can provide a registry edit to enable it if required.

I dont have an Iphone but i found this on Youtube if it helps

He's holding the phone in landscape orientation and taking a picture the correct way. It's just that he wants it portrait and can't be bothered to look how the phone is "seeing" it's orientation. He could have taken the same photo in the orientation he wanted if he had held the phone correctly.

Accelerometers aren't perfect and can get confused st times. It happens on the Android phone I have as well.

Oh oh, I know this one. Might be a bit late but if someone learns something then all the better.

When you take a photo, it saves the orientation it should use to the EXIF data (this is where the camera model, GPS data, etc is also stored in a photo). This is used by a lot of software to rotate it on the fly so it displays properly.

Some sites don't properly handle that EXIF data on upload so you end up with photos showing in the wrong orientation.

I ran into this one on a client's site once. Right pain in the rear if you haven't dealt with it before. The most appropriate way to deal with it is to rotate it as per the EXIF data and strip all the data away.
