Eldest child is having a phone for Christmas.

I have an iPhone 5 reset and erased and ready to go, I have purchased a sim that shares my minutes and data so she's all up and running.

But I don't know what to do now.

I don't want to clone to my phone because I don't want her to receive my calls and texts and whatever else, I was hoping to clone to an old iPad.

I accidentally set up mine and hubby's phones where we were sharing contacts, delete of one phone and it deletes from another, I don't want to do that again either.

I'm assuming it needs its own apple account but can it still share the apple music? will all the texts and calls and apps come through to the ipad?

The internet is confusing me, is there somebody I can pay to do this for me? I don't know where to start.

Don't use your own apple ID. It's personal to you. If you do that and she installs an app - it will end up installing on yours. Set up an apple ID seperately for her but that you can keep control of. NOTE - don't be misled into thinking you must add a debit card when setting up the apple ID - if you look carefully there's ways to not add a card meaning your child can't go buying apps at your expense! As for music - my kids live on Youtube etc on their phones and it works for them. But I would personally never pay for apple music anyway but I'm just a cheap skate like that. In fact, I don't use my phone for music at all.

All just personal opinions, but using an apple ID of your own simply tells apple it's you! Therefore, yes, she would see your messages and your phone book would become cluttered with her school friends numbers. If you're really lucky she might even delete yours!

Forgot to say - use your own email address as a recovery address for the new apple ID too. You wouldn't believe how many bricked phones I see where customers kids forget their pin number, and resetting with iTunes isn't an option because they can't even remember their apple ID or password.

Wait wait, so you want to get everything she does on the iPad?

Short answer: you can’t. ish. You can login to the Apple ID on the Messages app, and likewise FaceTime, but stuff like WhatsApp, Snapchat, etc won’t automatically login without asking her to login to them.

Texts will show on both if you have forwarding enabled but it’s slightly flakey for SMS instead of iMessage, calls show up if you’re in proximity as it’s part of the Handoff feature.

Create an Apple ID as said in previous posts, and create an Apple Family so you can share all App Store purchases without having to pay again, and you can track location, etc.

How old is the eldest? If we’re talking teens then think twice about doing this as it may cause some friction (I would have been fuming if this was done without my knowledge in my teens personally), if younger then by all means.

@Tilly I charge £30 for a 5s. I don't currently have one in stock though so if you wanted it doing then it would be around Wednesday or Thursday before I could get one in for you (allowing for the bank holiday too)
If you'd like it doing please drop me a text on 07871 613924
