IT Engineer Required

Mark Pennington
Hi,

We are a business IT support company based just off Lichfield Road, on The Oval (Stafford, ST17 4LQ). We are looking to hire another IT Engineer to join our happy family.

We are not necessarily looking for an IT Expert with lots of experience (although that would be nice), we are happy to train. More importantly we ARE looking for someone who has good interpersonal skills; able to manage customers/work; willing to learn; work in a team. You must also be able to drive and have access to a car.

The majority of our customers are based in the Staffordshire area, but we do support a number of customers in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. Any mileage is all paid for at a standard rate.

If you are interested, please send me an email info@epx.ltd.uk, ideally with a CV.

If you want more information about what we do, please go to www.epx.ltd.uk

Thanks all

Mark

I phoned up Mark and talked to him about the job. The job itself sounds excellent with plenty to keep you interested. I don't think i can apply for it though. I'm married with 2 kids and the money offered won't pay the bills.

Please forgive the diversification for a second and i apologise for hijacking the thread if anyone feels that i have

6 years ago when i last changed my job i was quite well qualified. Some other engineers i know still think of the level of education and vocational training i received was actually pretty good.
(in no paticulair order)
5 year technician apprenticeship
2 year Ordinary national Certificate in mechanical engineering (one full day 09:00 - 16:30 +2 nights 18:00-21:00)
2 year City and guilds in quality assurance and control (18:00-2100 one night a week)
2 year city and guilds in electrical and electronic engineering (1500-1900 one afternoon a week+3 exams) (licentiate+90%)
12 week national examing board of supervisory management NEBS (18:00-2100 two nights a week)
3 year NVQ mechanical engineering manufactre (logging for 3 hours every week all tasks+drawings+technician projects)
1 week vocational training in Fluke's Metrack SQL, Flukes Metcal SQL, crystal reports SQL, Unix dallas storeworks, learn to speak german, combined expression of uncertainty and confidence in measurement UKAS M3003, and many more as required.

Now i look at jobs catered in my chosen field and simply can't apply for them. No Degree = GTFO

When the hell did that happen please ?

Surely if you put a decent CV together outlining the above and sent it off, even if graduates only were being asked for, you'd be in with as good a chance?

Graduates are ten a penny these days - someone with comparable qualifications and experience in the workplace would stand out in the crowd wouldn't they?

Having a degree simply means an ability to learn and stick with something, I've known employers hire people with business degrees to train in IT roles, over people with IT degrees! But I'm not bitter, no not me....

Quals in general mean very little these days thanks to making everything 'accessible' to everyone. Unfortunately the lefties were a bit too thick to realise that a qualification is used to put people above others in specific fields, and than levelling the playing field gives no one an advantage and thus employers are relying on experience. They have twigged that you can get a 2.2 by turning up once a week and spelling your name correctly on the exam papers and as such only take on experienced people. This leaves graduates going for NMW or £6.50/hour jobs even though they have been to uni.

Labour. A Fairer future for everyone.

Degrees don't mean much these days unfortunately :(

Tek have you contradicted yourself above?
Well, yeah, but only through bitterness! I got an IT degree, my GF at the time got a business one. We both applied for IT roles at a company dahn sarf, she got an interview and I didn't. It was for a programmers role, something she knew nowt about!

But in the main, its the people you meet at uni that matter. The vast majority of my jobs have been because of who I know, not what.

Yeah i know for a fact that most of the time its a lot easier to get a job if you know someone who already works at a place. Especially so if your related to the person.
I feel especially betrayed by the MOD as the reason that the wages are lousy is because they are supposed to give you unrivaled access to training and education in post.
In six years i was offered nothing, when i asked if i could do a HNC or degree i was told the budget could not stretch and operational commitments due to conflicts prevented me from having any time off from the workface.
I applied a few months back to go back to what i consider to be 'home' where i did my apprenticeship at Perkins Stafford(nee Dormans). They only employ degree students for design and development now. Engineering jobs on the shop floor now are unsecure tempory contracts to anyone desperate enough to work for them.

Maybe its just me being stuck between "isn't thick" and "isn't a graduate"

Thanks for the comments people have made, at least I know the view I am getting isn't a warped perception of the truth.
