    What a wonderful informative post.
In light of some recent oppressive posts by a certain opinionated vegan, I must say that your post was such a refreshing change.

Informative but not lecturing, it’s certainly a much better way to convey the vegetarian message.
    Some others should take note.

    Thank you so much, @Carole

I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly forty years. It’s hugely important to me but my husband and most of my friends eat meat.

Eating out has got a lot easier and it’s a few years since the ‘vegetarian option’ was broccoli bake. Even now, though, we can have awkward experiences in restaurants.

Six of us were once asked to leave a fish restaurant when my husband asked if they could do a green salad for me. They took the menus away and that was that.

There have been loads of times when the only vegetarian option on a menu includes Parmesan and all the puddings contain gelatine.

I don’t want to have to make a fuss or complain, I just want to be able to enjoy a meal out with friends.

I suspect many are ignorant of what constitutes being a vegan including myself so I see no reason why you shouldn't ask for what you want and I agree with @Carole it isn't making a fuss or complaining the way you portray it.

It isn't my own lifestyle choice but that doesn't mean you shouldn't expect to be catered for especially in this day and age.

There are loads of people out there who think that vegan/vegetarian/halal/kosher dietary requirements are being a bit over-picky, yet they would be incensed if Stafford had a gaegogi restaurant.

(I suspect Flossie might have strong opinion on the matter)

Yes - I think we’d give that one a miss. Even with a vegetarian option - which would definitely include Parmesan!

Actually though, Gramaisc, that’s a really good way to explain why vegetarians and vegans worry about contamination in restaurant kitchens. Someone appalled by the idea of eating dog meat might be quite keen to know that the roast chihuahua dish wasn’t spattering into their beef.

Of course, with a no-deal brexit....

I really like your attitude. You don’t want to eat meat but if someone else wants to eat meat then that’s up to them. Vive la difference and all that.

I’m always keen to learn about different things. I popped my head in the door of the “vegan thread” but, oh my goodness me, that place isn’t for the faint-hearted.
So much vitriol towards meat eaters, too many judgemental comments such as “I don’t know how you can live with yourself” and such like.

Comments such as these are neither helpful nor constructive.

Anyway I scuttled off out of that thread, (after being told to f*ck off) which is a total shame because my son and his girlfriend are vegetarian and I’m always on the lookout for tips and helpful hints.

I already knew about the Parmesan and I knew about gelatine. I made the mistake of buying them gummy sweets. I now now that you can buy wine gums, gummy sweets minus gelatine but it’s all a learning curve.

I personally don’t eat a huge amount of meat myself, I adore fish and the vegetables are the best bit of the meal.
I’m currently, while typing this in the process of making a veggie lentil soup ( no chicken stock or ham hock), however I just don’t think that I could be a vegetarian myself.
Huge kudos though to those with the willpower, the determination and the commitment to the cause.
    I admire you.

And thank you to those who don’t condemn us non veggies for choosing a different path.

As I think I've posted on here before my wife's a vegan but my son and I aren't. We all seem to be able to rub along nicely. Lad and I often eat veggie/vegan when that's the nicer option both at home and when eating out.

As for the vegan thread well, that just seems to be an excuse for one 'member' to get his rocks off posting animal porn incessantly.

This quickly messed up the thread.

I was generally interested in the latest goings on at La Casa.

@proactive who's posted animal porn incessantly on this site?

Tried this place early doors tonight before The Gatehouse.
Had the early doors special, two courses for £13. Really good service, good value food, steaks were better than expected at the price and two complimentary limoncellos after. Will definitely be going back to try the 'proper' menu.

Just want to say, after some mixed opinions, we judged for ourselves and eat here last night! Six of us dined, starters, main course, sweets, coffee & a drink, for £60 for myself and the devine Mrs G! A very impressed thumbs up from all 6, mix of a veggie, a vegan and four carnivores. Will definitely go again, very friendly too!
