Hi, wonder if anyone can help me please,
My laptop screen just started flickering loads! I had to switch it off because I could hardly make anything out on screen, it was flickering every second! Have no idea why, I was on google and facebook at the time so not running anything new.
Does anyone know what has caused it and what I should do next time? It is ok now I have switched it on but dont know when it will happen again.
Thanks :)

Common fault in lappys is the wires to the screen not making contact in the case under the fret at the top of the key board,
the constant open and closing works them loose, try pressing on the top at various places along the top edge, if it starts flashing again, if it stops the connector needs
tightening up some were inside, fairly simple if you know how or have a manual.

I'd bet money that it has an Nvidia graphics chip which has overheated and the solder has cracked. If so, unfortunately it's a common fault and there's no simple repair as specialist kit is required to re-solder them.

If it goes again i'd be happy to look at it on a no fix = no fee basis, but couldn't make any promises of a successful repair.

Then of course the 7 year manufacturing defect comes in...Vicky, what brand and model is your laptop, and where did you get it from?

That entire saga put me off nVidia for live!

I've not seen it happen to any manufactured in the last 2 years, as I think they have been more adequately heatsunk since. It all began when "lead free solder" was made compulsory. The stuff is crap! I still purchase leaded solder from eBay as I hate the replacement stuff for this very reason.

It's not just that...it's their "renaming old products to make consumers assume they're getting something new".

e.g. renaming the 8800 to 9800, with no product changes at all...sickens me.

Ah, but that's something even Microsoft have been guilty of really. They launched Vista way too soon and it was glitchy as hell and got a bad name for itself. After Service Pack 1 it was great, but the bad name stuck. So they tarted up things a bit and basically re-launched it as Windows 7 instead. Realistically it should have been a service pack update to Vista, but by renaming it they got people interested again (and of course cashed in on it!)
Legally speaking SOMETHING has to change to re-name it. I haven't really looked into things such as the 8800 vs. the 9800, but I'm sure if we dug around enough there would be something that changed to allow the new model number. Could have been as simple as the heatsink upgrade or the use of an improved flux etc., but even the SPEC is identical, there surely must have been a reliability improvement or something??

Thank you very much everyone! Esp wmrcomputers for offering to look at it. I got it from currys about 4 years ago. Its a packard bell easynote r1938 - so the sticker underneath says!! I have been really careful with it and not dared to close it! It seems OK atm, but thanks for all your help. Fingers crossed!!
