Both Homebase and Tescos have a Rug Doctor carpet hire machine, I've used it before and its excellent!

The price is around £22 for 24 hours although I believe Homebase has 15% off this weekend so if you pop down before close it will be cheaper than normal!

I believe that B&Q may also have a Rug Doctor outlet. I have seen carpets that I would have been reluctant to take to the tip redeemed by the use of one of these machines.

We just replaced the carpet when it smelt of sick. It just seems like the best thing to do once the kids and pets have made a mess of it. A normal VAX type machine will clean up a good quality, high pile carpet from normal day to day dirt though. I just think as you have left it the chances of you getting it clean and smelling fresh with a normal VAX are slim. I would lend you my VAX, but it is not 100% and leaks water so you have to be super quick and know how to use it otherwise it makes the carpet really wet (and wastes the very expensive cleaning solution).
By going down to one of the local carpet places and buying off the roll end we usually get a room done for £120. Its OK carpet as well - not the stuff you get in a student house if you know what I mean!

Yeah that's what I found in the past. With having kids, a dog and cats we are unfortunately used to the carpets getting trashed.
Oh well on the plus side you will have a lovely new carpet soon. :) Don't forget to check your underlay is OK as well as that can be expensive.

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over your carpet, brush it in, leave it for an hour or so then vacuum up. Worked a treat with our carpet. The Bicarbonate of soda absorbs the odour
