Let me take your photos!

A few posts under my belt
Hello,

I am keen to set up a photography service in the area and am currently looking for projects to build up my port-folio with.

I'll consider any project you can suggest! From pet portraits to documenting your events, catalogue photos to band photos. You name it and I'll shoot it!

As I am starting out (I have the skills and equipment, but lack the evidence to prove it yet) I offer my services for extremely low rates. If you aren't happy with the finished result I wont charge you a penny.

If you have a website which is in need of photos I'll provide my service for the cost of my petrol to your location. My only condition is that you provide photo credits and a link from your website to mine (once I get enough shots to get one up and running).

If you want to give someone a portait for Christmas or their birthday but can't (or don't want to) afford the expense of professional photography studios... get in touch with me!

If you want a pet portrait I'll provide you with a print and a CD of images for just £7.50.

Come on... remember, if you don't like the result I'll not charge you, what have you got to lose?!

Hi photo-em, welcome to The Forum :)

Good luck with the venture. Make sure you join in the other conversations round here though, and don't just use this place for free advertising! I know shoes and a few others round here are keen on photography, so I'm sure you'll have plenty to talk about :D

Welcome to the forum!

I do a lot of what you're talking about already and have built up a reasonable client base in the area just as a hobby photographer really, so there is definitely a market - I wish you the best of luck in getting up and running!

Do you have a studio facility? Its the ony thing I would love to have but if you're setting up in business then I guess its a must.

If you would like any help with marketing / pr / web presence / printing etc. its pretty much all covered on here amongst the different members of the forum so just ask if you need anything, i'm sure someone here will be able to help!

EDIT: Also don't do what I did (and am now regretting) which is to under value your services. You have the equipment and skills but cannot prove it, the best thing IMO is to do what you're doing now but build up youw PF for free, even DVDs etc for free and get yourself a solid marketing structure.

Then once you can 'sell' your services you should charge nearer to industry rates. The reason for this is that I did some work about 18 months ago for pittance and the client keeps coming back but expecting the (what is frankly ridiculous) price.

I get a reasonable amount of my PF stuff doing shots for charities, you cannot charge but they are more than happy to link you up if you offer them free DVDs of images - have a hunt about and make some enquiries.

EDIT 2: Make sure your software is legal too, I had one client asking for proof of ownership of Lightroom before publishing my prints, which they are perfectly entitled to do, and because it's errr...... a 'trial' ;) version I couldn't prove that and I lost the contract.

Thanks Shoes, I'll certainly ask around on here once I want to set up my website.

I don't have a studio I'm afraid. I've just graduated from uni and don't yet have the funds for a full studio outfit. I've been doing a bit of d.i.y. and have managed to make myself a portable backdrop and reflectors.... so i'm slowly getting there! I'm making the most of natural light at the moment though.

The Doxey Arms did an offer of all you can drink for a tenner

The pub was packed out

It went bust

It is now boarded up

Shoes offered sound advice about price and value

If you are cheap - people will think you are no good

Not being negative - people are used to Venture pricing which has raised the pricing of portraiture etc but if you have a pile em high strategy you will need to pile em high for ever.

Raising pricing is near to impossible in a recession - maybe have another think about your business plan

but you are right - you can charge according to evidence so good luck with getting the evidence -

technically you cannot divide or multiply by my big fat zero so he's just better than me lol

No prizes for guessing who's kept my points down to a manageable collection.

EDIT: Another successful derail to notch up on the board, even LS can't take those away from me :D

Of course you can; it's just that infinity or zero aren't much use as answers. :)

Hi Emma. Just to further reinforce shoesez comments, I started out at fixed price PC repairs of £20. Now I have a client from 18 months ago who doesn't wish to pay my more recent prices, and also thinks that he should only have to pay for around 2 out of 3 callouts.

I also agree with John... set yourself too cheap and people defo think you are no good. I now have a good client base who know & trust me and would pass my number on to others day in - day out. It's taken me longer than i expected though and all of my work is through word of mouth... yet in the early days I posted a few thousand leaflets advertising the £20 thing and got relatively bugger all business! Like John said, people probably thought I was no good or just wanted to nick their PC's!!

Wishing you well in your venture, times are harder than ever for new businesses but I genuinely hope things go well.

Hello and welcome to the forum!!

There is a forum image host. Perhaps putting some of the shots your pleased with in this thread might encourage business? It may however be a bad idea admin might not like it. No children though. No people who's consent you don't have. No nakedness. No dogs. No trainers. No caps. No no, no-no no no, no-no no no, no-no-theres-no-limit. Wait, trailing off there a little.

(Don't let the signature fool you I know nothing about photography it is just spam)

I agree. People are wierd about prices. I have been known to make glass display cases and only one person has ever not bought one at the price quoted and I'm fairly sure they wouldn't have had it at any price. If they want it then they'll buy it, don't give yourself away.

"No people who's consent you don't have. No nakedness." Yeah, go on, we don't mind, really.
