Motorway roadwork speed limits could be increased

Highways England is trialling an increase in the speed limit from 50mph to 60mph on a four-mile stretch of the northbound M1 near Rotherham. Similar limits could be seen elsewhere next year if it is deemed a success.

The issue I have is that drivers will go over the 60 limit....changing from 50 to 60 mph would only save 48 seconds over 4 miles...

These sections of road are managed by specs cameras to stop that happening. break the limit and get fined

I would be happy to see roadworks restricted in length, last time I ventured north on M6 there was 14 miles of cones. That’s 28 miles to endure if you are in the unfortunate position of having to drive through them both ways. I can’t believe that’s necessary, especially when there are very few construction crews working most of the time. I also ask myself if the road is safe to drive on at 60 mph with narrow lanes /cones Ect why is the motorway speed limit only 70 mph when fully open and a hard shoulder to use.

Specs cameras generally don't put speeders of. Increasing the limit will only make people faster and drive more aggressively... Especially truck drivers, which with narrower lanes generally in place for such scenarios isn't a good combination....

I've just had an email, from Highways England, to remind me that the these major works, on the M6, commence in March 2018 and are expected to take 4 years to complete.

So on a journey from J13 north to J19 will effectively be 50mph and road works all the way. It's mindblowing stupidity that. Am I the only one who almost falls asleep under the bordom of the current 50MPH zone between 16 and 19? And they now want an even longer stretch of sleep inducing roadworks stretching from 13 all the way to 19, bar a few miles at Stoke. I guess it just had to conincide with my daughter 4 years at liverpool Uni didn't it :(

Might make it quicker. Took me 3 hours from 10 to 19 tonight, and I did have to avoid the motorway for the most part.

I'm amazed no-ones fell asleep in the stupid 30mph stretch on the M5 J1-2. (Although most times it only seems to be me sticking to it in fear of a speeding fine..)

Is your daughter enjoying her time at uni @kyoto49 ?

Enjoying a drop of red.

All these car drivers moaning all the time. There are alternatives you know, like the train, coach bicycle or on foot.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
44 miles of roadworks for about a year from March 2018 to March 2019 - when the roadworks from 16 to 19 are alleged to finish.

I have been working on a new driving technique to help keep up concentration levels at low speeds. Another benefit is speed cameras can't read the number plates. :master:

Not sure about tyre wear though :P
