    I've got a Malwarebytes Premium account .

Just received an email (going to my old virgin email adress that I no longer use but emails still coming through). Supposedly from Malwarebytes , saying to click on the link for a 'free update'. Do I trust this? Wondering why they'd be sending that, when I normally automatically get notification on the Malwarebytes on my laptop account, saying to install new version from the Malwarebytes screen .
My account today says 'updates:current' and no mention of a new version being available.

    Email reads :

I got that as well and did what you did .... and got no sign of any impending upgrade (it just did its thing when I clicked "Updates: Current").

So I just ignored the email.

ETA In fact, it looks like I've deleted it as well.

TBF, and having Googled it, it sounds like it might be pukka.

But it'll do no harm to wait a bit, and indeed there may be some advantages if you did. (Just keep your current version up to date.)

My subscription runs out next march anyway, so will just buy latest version then . I always check to make sure its all up to date and do regular scans. It's blocked quite a few nasties.
( Very wary nowadays. Our first desk top years ago , we installed Norton which came with it, then a while after a 'Norton' popped up saying we weren't protected and to 'click here to remedy'....BANG....not Norton afterall  .When I took it to WMR to fix, he came to save what was on there before doing his stuff. Got a phone call to say nothing to save as it had completely wiped everything off !)

Malwarebytes is on the level, its pretty good at its detection.

I dont use it now as my Synology router and server comes with with its own threat prevention and is clever enough to drop packets before they hit the network anyway.

There are ways to tell if an email is genuine, which varies depending on the email client being used.

However, if a genuine update to Malwarebytes software is available, then the program itself should eventually inform you so. On those grounds you should maybe just ignore the email to be safe.

Cheers @wmrcomputers . I know it's a different address to when they replied to my email back in 2018.

Having to pay these last 2 years since I changed my laptop . The code you set me up with ( and son and most of Worcester uni  ) and worked for years after , suddenly stopped working . Worth it though to get the full Malwarebytes cover!

Should my 'Scan for Root Kit' be turned on ? It automatically comes up with it switched off, and the example page also shows it 'off' . Googling has brought up other people asking the same question (but then their answers are in such jargon that I'm none the wiser  )

    Mine not updated automaticall yet......

yes, i used to always have it switched on.
it takes slightly longer to scan ( hardly noticable though)
its looking for code embedded in the hard drives partition ( the bit that windows uses to boot from )

Automatic scan earlier without it on took about 13 minutes. The one with it switch on has only taken 4 minutes. So assuming it's ignored scanning the items it scanned earlier and just scanned for the rootkits ?

It should have rescanned everything again if all your options are ticked in the settings tab.
13 minutes seems a long time to scan ( unless you have several very large hard drives to check )

on average , mine used to take about 5 mins scanning a 256GB SSD drive and a 1 TB hard drive ( although not full).

double check your settings to be sure.

    EDIT:

ive just installed malwarebytes myself and im running a custom scan with everything turned on. ( free version).
running it on a pc with 256gb ssd and 1 tb hard drive.
i will 2nd edit this post once its completed.

    2ND EDIT:

when i select full scan rather than threat scan it does indeed take much much longer over 15 mins so far without even starting the 1tb drive yet.
i would imagine your settings are therefor set to threat scan and will be much quicker than before.
if you want a deep full scan , set it to custom scan and tick everything.

I did a full scan earlier and it took 33 minutes (361,000 items in .25tb).

I had that page up before , on the recommended threat scan. Then I clicked on something which brought up 3 different types of scans, including this custom scan. Now that I've clicked on the custom scan , I can't get back to the page to get it back to the previous threat scan .

Edit : Just got back out of it and back in again....think I'm back to original set up again now
