Although the new Store is oh so smart, but I do so miss the old Store in Gaolgate. Was so handy to drop into, nice Cafe etc. I do find the new Store very dark especially the ground floor, although the Food Hall is superb. Cannot be bothered taking the escalator up to the Cafe. Over all the place has lost it's intimacy it had in Gaolgate. Am feeling out of sorts now when going into Town, my old habit of Parking in Sainsbury's and walking over to Gaolgate now seems pointless. Think it will take me awhile to decide where I shop and park from now on.

Previous store was the worst M&S I've ever been in. Awful children's and men's section, cafe too small, women's section overcrowded. New one a vast improvement though l agree massively lacking in natural light - I suppose that's to maximise hanging space.

Really?

I worry for society when someone can't be bothered to stand on an escalator - hardly the greatest effort you could make.

Good point about the lighting though, I thought M&S had invested millions in replacing all it's bulbs and tubes to daylight ones purely to increase hanging space and give the impression of pure daylight

M & S are apparently concerned about the possible arrival of Waitrose. A large number of their elderly food buying customers would prefer to park in the open not on a multi storey. Should Waitrose open behind the old M&S they may lose some of their grey pound.

I love the new food hall and the ladies wear section is much improved, the cafe is fine (nice St Clements cake!). However, I was so disappointed with the Home section. It's tiny!

Home sections in M&S usually are though -although I suspect most people didn't know M&S did nice home things, and if they like what the see, they can also get stuff from the website sent to the store.

I really like it as a store, nice to see a bigger range of clothes and the food hall and cafe are lovely.

What's it like over looking the river though, a great chance to show off the river and to have a store over looking it, how is it?
Lovely?

How many towns have a river running through them and also have the chance to make it great, not many, so, how did they get on, the developers i mean?

Oo I like it. I love the subdued lighting- nice to walk in and not immediately start sweating and stressing under the blinding fluorescent lights most clothes stores have- every spot and under-eye shadow magnified tenfold, making every garment held up to oneself in the mirror look absolutely shite. It feels calm and cool in there, and there is loads of room to mooch round. The food hall (my main reason for visiting) is just great. Thumbs up from this squirrel!

Never used the café as could never get a table and it was so cramped

To be fair they do provide a lift as well...

The old M&S was an absolute joke, badly designed and fitted out, I can't remember another M&S where you couldn't buy a men's suit.
We went to the café on Sunday and it was great. I can't remember the last Café I visited where they heated the tea cups with boiling water before giving them to you. Top marks.
