Meter reading scam?

Just had a phone call asking me for my meter readings , I said "But the coop have them from me over the internet" and she said that they have to check the once a year to see that they are correct, Well I refused and said it wasn't convenient, checked on line and It appears there is some sort of scam going on, not sure what but apparently it's not the coop but some other firm doing it, at the least trying to get me to do there job and possibly worse.
It occurs to me that if I was giving incorrect readings it would still be me giving incorrect readings so why get me to read it again!
Definitely something dodgy going on here!

Could it be Lowri Beck, who seem to do meter reading for various energy companies? They once rang me (came through as a missed call). Never called back and, without written authorisation from my supplier, they would have been wasting their time anyway.

As someone who works in the industry its very possible it could be legit but also possible it could be a scam...
  • Get them to confirm who they are and who your supplier is
  • Ask them to confirm your MPAN (13 digit Meter Point Administration Number)
  • If needs be send the reads into your supplier and not them.
If genuine the party calling will most likely be the DC - Data Collector a party appointed by the Supplier to read and validate the meter readings. All suppliers have an industry target to have 97% of their portfolio (consumption volume) from the last 14 months settled to actual consumption. Just because you have been billed to actual readings doesn't necessarily mean that the readings have been validated by the Data Collector....

AMR & SMART meters are meant to reduce these requirements.... no laughing at the back please....

This is the geekiest thing I've read on this forum. Ever.

I won a party 7 once, at the star and garter pub in a shilling raffle, and brought it back home on the rack
on my moped, it was bulging when I got back home and sat on my bedside table for
a week before I dared open it.

Yes, with a screwdriver and hammer.

Was it a female voice? I believe that @basil's sister worked for the gas board.
