Microfilters.

When I had a new modem a couple of years ago, it came with a new microfilter and I was urged to fit that with it. Today, the landline stopped working, very suddenly, as the phone was actually ringing. The broadband was still working, but all the phones were stone dead. Multiple plugging and unplugging ensued and the upshot is that the microfilter is the source of the problem, although the broadband side is still working. I had the good fortune to have a fair idea where the old one was and replacing that in the system has restored matters.

Is there much to chose between these devices? Are there ones that are significantly better than others? Or do they just work - or not? Should I seek to replace the elderly one that I am relying on now?

Etc.

I've never massively looked into the quality differences between brands, but to be honest even a couple of quid jobby usually lasts a couple of years anyway so if there are more expensive ones I doubt that they'll be any better value in the long run anyway.
Cordless phones are known to cause them to fail sooner - although I've never quite understood why.

If the one you've swapped it out with works, why change it. Just make sure you grab a spare one at some point when you see a bargain somewhere.

That it what I suspected.

I don't have any cordless phones, if I did, I would have them safely located by attaching a string to a point on the wall, so that I could be sure of their location..

It looks like they've stopped doing the big, grey torches.
