Modern CDs are too loud

this has been the general consensus amongst mastering engineers for at least 10 years..

it's not that modern CDs are "louder" - after all, CDs have a finite recording limit, and anything beyond that would introduce digital clipping.. it's just that, in an effort to make songs stand out on the radio, engineers are driving their compressors harder and harder, to the point where modern recordings have almost no dynamic range :(

what does this mean for your average joe? it means that, as far as your ear is concerned, all the songs you listen to are at maximum volume all the way through, regardless of how loud the artist intended it to be.. this has a variety of negative effects on the music, and the way you enjoy it.. there are no lulls, no crescendos, no tight thumps of the kick drum.. EVERYTHINGJUSTSOUNDSLIKETHISALLOFTHETIMEANDYOUREARSGETPRETTYTIREDOFITPRETTYQUICKLY!!

anyway.. it's not going to change any time soon so, meh - whatever girlfriend :nyd:

defo, never was a fan of them tbh. They scratch, the case have alway been flimsy as hell. it's a reet pain in the rectum to keep changing them over and keeping them organised etc.
I know i've dissed them on another thread but ipods really are a godsend. No mess, no scratching, i can play it in the car, through my amp, on the move (never done this!?) hell i've even got one of those docking things for the kitchen! Once you get to grips with itunes it really is a doddle :)

saw them at leeds festival and to be fair they were pretty darn good. late afternoon, warm(ish) sun, dancing, girls, booze, narcotics, bouncy tunes, freaking sweet.

better than on the home sterio with an overly loud compact disk. lol, i prefer a low quality mp3 converted from an overly loud copied CD!

it was deliberate. no it wasnt. if its a choice of two then the wrong one gets chosen every time. but if i try to pre-empt it by deliberately changing my mind then its still wrong. cant win.
