I remember long long ago when I worked on the Staffordshire Advertiser talking to Lady Antonia Fraser, at that time the wife of Stafford's MP Hugh Fraser. She seemed a very pleasant lady .. (some years later I read one of her books, a fearsome biography of Oliver Cromwell.) I believe eventually she ran off with playwright Harold Pinter, and I have to say, she went up another 10 points in my opinion when that happened.
I'll give Stafford its due on Tory MP's. Boy could they pick em.
I remember quite a few of Hugh Fraser's 1979 posters, "Go with Fraser", made their way down to Wembley that year.

I always liked that she still went by "Lady Antonia Fraser" even after running off.

Cromwell - our Chief of Men - is the book you are thinking of if memory serves me correctly.

Yep that's the one. Still got it around here somewhere. Very detailed and precise, but was never sure if it got close to the man himself. That's not a criticism in itself. Cromwell was not somebody anyone could really understand.

Cromwell was a landowner, and like all landowners could not see how the franchise could be thrown open to the landless.

Because there will always be people who do not understand basic human freedoms.

They are called Tories, and should be always and everywhere opposed.

Too simplistic an analysis for me. He was certainly based in the sub-aristocracy classes and had little or no time for levellers or the like. His military abilities rapidly became apparent despite his lack of experience in the field. And to some extent therein lies his true failure, for the Army he built and led to repeated success was the genie in the bottle. We started with a self-centred arrogant monarch and ended up with a dictator.
(Sound familiar?)
There are some interesting parallels with Brexit, a divided country not being the least of them.

Of course this is all opinion. The first thing you must accept when reading history is that most of it is opinion, propaganda and lies rather than fact.

What, that one sentence about one aspect of his core belief system was too simplistic to incorporate the entire political and social importance of his role in English history?

Are you suggesting that my one sentence summary of one particular aspect of one part of what made him what he was was somehow too simplistic?

That's too simplistic an analysis for me.

Yikes.

I confess to being unaware that you had invented Cromwellian hagiography - i would be eternally indebted if you could provide a link to any of your original research, should it be available online.

Your wish is my command.

I used to do research professionally, although to be fair it wasn't history, it was something else. A higher being would come along, give you a spec and say: "Figure it out … chop chop !" (No reference to Charlie One here I assure you. :teef:) They didn't provide a 'link,' just a glaring stare. You had to figure it out for yourself.

However I'll give you a good 'link' for your research.

Good luck with that. :heyhey:

ST16 Represent.
The Chinese Communist Party have also bought Abbotts Bromlee Boarding School . At a very good price
Bought some time back by Junzi International Education. Can’t see any clear links to CCP. I know Farage has been wittering on about this. Reports on the internet take the tone that JIE saved the school. Can you provide a link to the CCP?

Are those the bits without grass growing up the middle?
Not the best view,, but the motorway does have grass up the middle, and a hedge, and daffodils, when the Street View car finally goes along it at the right time of year.

And a hard shoulder, and the occasional lay-by.

The hedge is fairly effective against oncoming headlights.
