Too simplistic an analysis for me. He was certainly based in the sub-aristocracy classes and had little or no time for levellers or the like. His military abilities rapidly became apparent despite his lack of experience in the field. And to some extent therein lies his true failure, for the Army he built and led to repeated success was the genie in the bottle. We started with a self-centred arrogant monarch and ended up with a dictator.
(Sound familiar?)
There are some interesting parallels with Brexit, a divided country not being the least of them.
Of course this is all opinion. The first thing you must accept when reading history is that most of it is opinion, propaganda and lies rather than fact.
