Son and mates caught a train from Worcester station to London this morning. Just had a message showing their position at the moment ....they are still on the train , but it's sitting in Stafford Station waiting for 11.25 departure .....seems a strange route to take :hmm:

Or Manulla Junction.

A station that you can only arrive at, or leave from, by train - and you can't buy a ticket to it.

Add an estuary and that could almost be Dovey Junction, trains having arrived from Aberystwyth and Pwllheli.
And that reminds me that Aberystwyth must have one of the worst Wetherspoons and Pwllheli one of the best. .

At least the beer’s cheap and that’s all that matters isn’t it?

Their proximity to the railway station is perhaps what matters most with Hen Orsaf and Pen Cob.
Wetherspoons know that they couldn't charge any more than they do for what they offer but, no, cheapness isn't all that matters and that's why I've only had one pint in a Wetherspoons venue this year ( in Congleton waiting for the proper pubs to open ) and why I didn't mind four times last winter paying £7.40 for a pint of far better beer in a far nicer establishments.

Worcester to London via Stafford ?

Weird !!!! (Maybe the train driver is as good as me at getting lost  )

I thought the Euston Trains came down through Stafford from Manchester direction??

They only got the one train from Worcester with no changes .

I thought he was joking at first until he sent photo of Stafford station 11.12 am and location and time on his app

Message was : I'm in Stafford Station Haha.
Our train is well weird
Still on the train though on the way to London , but it's stopped in Stafford

Then the train started off from Stafford (platform 3) on time and on it's merry way again to arrive in Euston at time scheduled at 13.04.

I can see the 10.34 timetabled from Birmingham going via Stafford to London which will be due to engineering works between Birmingham and Rugby but I can't see this train originating from Worcester.

Either way any train heading towards Birmingham onwards towards London could be diverted via Stafford if the route via Coventry is unavailable.

If this route is blocked for engineering works then the route via the Chilterns should also be available and it is a similar time as going via Coventry/ Rugby.

I suggest your son checks the routed timetable next time to avoid diversions via strange towns like Stafford with its unusual inhabitants :)

Somehow I've morphed into the work IT engineer... Wonder if I'll get extra pay...

(Also, really didn't know what I was doing, it was just a lucky guess).

But trains between Worcester ( Foregate Street or Shrub Hill ) and Paddington have been running normally today !
Not mistaken Wolverhampton for Worcester ?

Aaah thanks , explains it then. They booked the train and hotel on a good deal ages ago (for an O2 event since cancelled due to Covid )

Better get the house super tidy for when they journey back , incase it's diverted around these parts again and they decide to hop off and pay a surprise visit....

No, definitely started off from Worcester where he lives. (Usually gone from Worcester down to London via Birmingham New Street when they've gone before )

Just asked him when he messaged me. 8.54am from Worcester Foregate Street and sat in Stafford for about 20 minutes . Mystery is bugging me

No wonder they were cheap tickets , just over 4 hour journey ...

I think he must have changed trains at Birmingham New Street and then caught an Avanti West Coast train to Euston.

There were no trains running south between Birmingham International and Rugby to Euston yesterday and Avanti services were routed via Stafford. This is from a Train Operator's website....

Dates
Sunday, September 6, 2020 to Monday, September 7, 2020
Engineering work is taking place between Birmingham International and Coventry, closing some lines.

Avanti West Coast:

All day, an amended timetable will run across the Avanti West Coast network. Trains will run to an amended timetable between Birmingham New Street and Preston, calling at Stafford for connections towards London. Trains between Wolverhampton and London Euston will be diverted to run via Stafford.

As Mudgie said there were direct services running between Worcester and Paddington but that journey, whilst slightly quicker, is a little more expensive.

I think your son was pining to come and see his Mum really :)
