New car stereo

i don't know if in-car audio (or "ICE" as the cool kids say) comes under the bracket of "Computer & Tech Chat", but it's near as dammit so it's going in here :P

my car stereo died a horrible death just before xmas.. it's been on its last legs for years now - i've had to glue the removeable fascia on with blutac for as long as i can remember, and a while ago it lost the ability to pick up any radio stations.. coupled with the fact it's a minidisc player, this all severely limits my options vis a vis musical entertainment whilst 'pon the road..

so, i'm looking at getting an all singing all dancing replacement.. does anyone have any suggestions? i definitely want something that can play mp3s (either from CD or DVD), and seeing as the babylon are really clamping down on chatting whist driving i figured i might as well get one that is bluetooth enabled as well.. i saw a sony one in action a couple of weeks ago (a friend at work has one in his car) and it was brilliant.. his model didn't feature USB/SD card inputs though, which is another feature i quite like the idea of (be great to chuck some tunes on a pen drive before going out, rather than having to burn a new disc every time).. i don't have an ipod and probably never will, so i'm not fussed at all about ipod/external mp3 player compatibility..

so far, the only one that i can find which features all of the above is the InPhase IPS248BT.. it's not bad looking, has USB and SD on the front, and all the aforementioned bluetooth shenanigans.. looks to be around the £119 mark - but unfortunately not available in halfords so i can't take advantage of their free fitting..

i am, however, conscious of the fact that i have never heard of "InPhase" before, and i don't want to be stuck with some no-name dog of a stereo that promises the world and doesn't deliver.. has anyone else heard of these? or have any other suggestions for car stereos that fit the bill? i could save myself a few quid (as well as the hassle of fitting it) and get the sony one mentioned above from halfords, but it doesn't featured USB/SD inputs, which i quite like the idea of..

help me, audio geeks!

ive been on the same investigation myself dirtybobby, seeking a new peice of 'ICE' :P best ive found so far is the Blaupunkt range, prices and tech spec seems similar to what you are after, and there a whole bunch of different ones with / without the various techologies on it. the Blaupunkt-selling website bluespot below is cheaper than the halfords website, far as i can see. free delivery and 3 year anti-theft warranty too.

not made my purchase yet, but i will be in early jan.

let me know if you find anywhere / anything better!

Seen a Sony one at ebuyer, but doesn't have the front USB:

Loads of nice units there, but not many with bluetooth it seems.

Probs not what you are looking for but Argos have a Blaupunkt (sp?) dvd with 7" pop out screen for £100....

Bargain for a dvd player with screen, I think it plays mp3's from dvd too.

No bluetooth or usb though.

well, it's pay-day, so i've just ordered the inphase 248bt mentioned in my original post.. i've never even looked round the back of a car stereo, let alone fitted one, so fingers crossed it won't be too complicated..

i'll let y'all know how it turns out, as i'm sure you're all dying to know :v:

well, after much grunting and swearing, it's in.. the hard part was getting the old sony one out!

trouble is, no matter what sound source i choose (radio, CD, mem card, etc.) i get really bad static.. does anyone here know about stuff like this? is it a crap stereo, or is it just that it needs grounding or something? as far as i can tell, all the cables are connected, so if it does need grounding i'm not sure how to go about it.. can you even ground something in a car??

I think you might need a rubber tail hanging off the car or is that to earth it to stop you getting a static shock?

It could be one and the same.

i think it's a faulty head unit, actually.. the noise is a bit crackly, like it's a faulty pre-amp or something.. i've spoke to the retailer and i'm swapping it out for another one :)
