New Laptop - Windows 8 - WTF?!!

Okay so I hate technology - that prob not the best opening sentence on a Computer and Gaming thread...

My poor poor beloved laptop died a death last week, it kept turning itself on and off at will, the screen would fail randomly and it would freeze anytime you were trying to do something important.

Hence the new shiny (possibly shitty - I haven't made my mind up yet) laptop...

But firstly Windows 8?! What the hell? What is this crap? Its almost impossible to understand!

I feel like its built to SHARE.

SHARE PEOPLE SHARE! SHARE EVERYTHING! SHARE ALL YOUR INFORMATION WITH EVERYONE ALL THE TIME!

I don't want everything linked together, all in sink (lol) ready to upload my million and one 'selfies' to facebook as soon as I get home...

Is there a 'normal please' button I'm missing? Can I make it not all flashy and extra random screen thing?

It doesn't make any sense - I don't even know how to find the simple things?

Okay that was basically a rant - but seriously does any one have any practical advice for me?

Will I get used to it? Should I just pull my finger out of my techno-hating ass?

Help!

HI TCRL

Install "Classic Start". The easiest way is via ninite.com (just tick the classic start check box and run their installer).

Once it's installed it will allow you to run it from the desktop more like Windows 7

Let me know how you get on. Once it has installed, I suggest you do the following....
From the desktop, RIGHT click the Start button then left click on Settings. Under the "Start Menu Style" tab select Windows 7 Style. Under the "Skin" tab tick the "Reduce glass color" and then click on OK.
When you restart your computer it should automatically go straight to the desktop. From the start button you will also have access to the new style start screen so you have the best of both worlds.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
It's a horrible OS, designed for touchscreen and bodged to fit non-touchscreen devices.

Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell to make it look & feel like Windows 7 looks like a reasonable operating system but I think I will wait until Windows 10 is rolled out and being used by the general public before I think about upgrading from 7.

I just got rid of the laptop lol!

Its going back - Id rather have my beloved broken one and put up with it randomly turning on and off / having a screen wobble every now and then...

I didn't like the whole thing (I wasn't just being difficult honest!)

It was so slow! My old broken 5 year old laptop was better!

All I want is a something that is good for web browsing - I don't stream videos or watch games so I really thought I wasn't asking for much!

But if I was on say Asda's Home section and trying to scroll through products it was glitchy and clunky - my old laptop doesn't have a problem??

Unfortunately there is some REALLY underpowered stuff on the market today. I have a laptop here for sale that is probably around 6 years old, that performs better than some of the new ones you can buy.

I hate Windows8 with a passion, I daren't go near my laptop for anything other than iTunes.
Each time I go on the laptop, I forget how to sodding close it down, I mean who's bright idea was it??!

My old Samsung G2 is more user friendly, than that piece of a sh1tt1ng shocker.

Modern life is goodish.

When I was 14 my mum saved up for ages and brought me an ipod for my birthday -

It was so beautiful but so INFURIATING!

It didn't even come with instructions - I threw an enormous strop, got out my tape player and refused to use it.

Needless to say we made friends in the end - but I know I can be very reluctant to change and unforgiving of technology.

If it wasn't for Stafford forum and my liking of gossip I would declare myself internet free and become a woodland recluse...

We're not to dissimilar me and you, Ratty Lady.

I've still a love you; hate you relationship with both my ipods, of which the newest is getting on for 10 years old, much the same as what goes for laptops, I sharnt and will not update for fear of the ag!

Just got a small touch screen laptop with Windows 8.1 and I actually quite like it after watching a few YouTube videos to learn how to use it. I think of it as a tablet with a keyboard attached.
