A few posts under my belt
Hi everyone,
I am also guilty of lurking for a little while before plucking up the courage to actually post.
I have lived in Stafford, or surrounding villages, all my 48 years and although I really like living here, one day I will have my house by the sea in the sunshine.
I have joined specifically today as we stayed at The Moat House this weekend and I really want @ChrisLewis to know what we thought so I will head on over to the eating out thread.

A few posts under my belt
Hi,
I wonder if you can help. I have this message at the top of my screen:
:buddy: Hothatch, make sure you choose an avatar! An avatar is the little picture that appears next to your name every time you make a post. Click here to set your Avatar picture. This notice will disappear as soon as you have set one!

However, when I click to set my avatar, I click on browse, select a picture from my gallery and click the save changes button but the picture doesn't upload and I still have the message above.

I would appreciate some help if anyone is free.

Might there be a size issue? Do you have to click Upload before saving?

Can anyone tell me why i can't upload any files/images? can't even upload an Avatar?
Cheers
There can be size issues with avatars, I understand.

I always just use Imgur for my own images on here - others may use the in-house one and have advice for you.

I've never uploaded a file....

You should be able to upload an avatar, presumably as long as it meets size limits (though it's a good few years since I did).

As regards files (images and videos), I've always linked to a url. Of the 3 or 4 forums I frequent, only one allows files to be uploaded, and this forum isn't it.*

Anyway, I hope this helps ..... and welcome aboard.

We do have a button that says "Upload a file", but I've never used it....

..between Post Reply and More Options.

Ooops .... I must've forgotten that button. I supposed I've become locked in to the same way of doing things. Anyway, I'm off to try it out.

Trying to upload a file (wish me luck) .....

Welcome to The Forum, @The Tempest Arborist. :)

What happens when you try to upload? If the picture is very large (a photograph taken with a high resolution camera, for example) then you may have to reduce it. You can do that with various applications (such as Microsoft Paint, Mac OS X Preview, etc.) or there are online tools such as this one: http://www.picresize.com/

As regards files (images and videos), I've always linked to a url. Of the 3 or 4 forums I frequent, only one allows files to be uploaded, and this forum isn't it.*

You've been able to upload files and photographs on here for years! It was only the old pre-2010 forum that relied on an external host.

When posting a message, simply drag and drop your photo / file onto the message - it's that simple. :)

Yeah, my bad.

I've got so used to posting a url to an image (even if it's one I've uploaded to a hosting site like Photobucket), that I've never looked at other ways to achieve the same thing.

Horses for courses, of course. I have to admit I often inline link to external hosts myself, after aeons of doing so on the various interconnected tubes of the Internet - just wanted to make sure people knew they can drag & drop directly onto The Forum should they wish to. :)
